Another Boka build, this time in 2.5"

Postby sp0rk » Tue Dec 15, 2015 5:32 pm

Yes, yet another boka build thread
This one will be a little slow, I've first got to work out whether to go a double wrap 1/4" reflux coil or a single wrap 3/8" with a 3/4" cold finger
Any suggestions for this part?
Then sourcing the extra copper and needle valve, stuff is a little scarce/expensive here in the upper hunter :/
I'm thinking 1.5 metre packed length then easy flanges to make the head removable for easy packing removal

If I did another one I think I would go with the double reducer model I reckon it would be a bit less fiddly .Air con suppliers seem to be the go for 1/4" copper

How much of a reduction would be too much?
I have some 1" copper laying about, but can try any source something a little bigger if that's probably too small

Aircon installers are definitely the go for 1/4"

I bought my local guy two beers at the pub and he gave me afew meters worth. If you need a side story, 1/4" copper is often used in marine fuel applications ;-)

Mac had the needle valves last I checked - email as they are not listed on the website.

If you already have a standard 180mm 1/4" double helix you wont need to make another, simply use this.
In a standard 2" reflux column operating 2400W of power a 1/4" double helix will knock all this down with 80mm to spare. ie you'll use ~100mm of your 180mm condenser.

If you haven't already built it you might want to talk to FSD, they may have something that could fit your needs ;)

Cheers,

Mech.

No reflux coil yet, but I'm kinda keen to build it myself so I'll see how I go
I was thinking I'll probably just pack some scrubbers in the coil to fill any deadspace with the extra .5" i've got over a normal 2" boka
I was trying to get to tradelink this afternoon to grab reducers and some other bits and pieces, but I had to hang around at work until later, will have to wait until saturday morning now

Would 2.5" to 2" back to 2.5" be ok for the double reducer style boka?
My local scrappy has some 2" so I guess I could use that if it'd suit

I think 2" would be a bit big I would be thinking 1" maybe 11/4"that would give you some room up top for the resovoir and cap

1/4" copper ordered today, might finally get a move on with this
just need the needle valve, a 1.5" cap and a few reducers and I"ll be able to plow through this build
busy this weekend, but hopefully I can light up the torch next weekend to burn some copper

After searching around for a while now, it seems that 2.5" to 1" reducers don't exist in Australia and I'm far too lazy to make some cones
Might have to see if there's anyone in the hunter with some 1.25" laying about, because I can get 2.5" to 1.25" reducers

Hunter is from Taree in the north to a bit south of Newcastle, and out west to Cassilis

Well after farting about for far too long with trying to find some sort of solution to still do a double reducer in 2.5" x 1", I'm getting to the point where I think unless I'm reducing from 2.5" to 2", then 2" to 1" it's a bit of a pain (and expensive in extra reducers)
I think 1.5" might be a bit big as it won't leave much room for a little deflector over the centre, may impede vapour flow a bit
So tossing up in my head right now whether to just do plates or not :?
Will just need to figure out how to scale the template to the exact size I need

If your wanting to save some cash just do the plates. I think the reducer style one is more the simplicity of the build which is why i would reducer style myself rather than cutting into the column.

there is another way but first,

what can you reduce down to? and what do you want to reduce down to? i may have a solution in my head for

if you want to reduce from 2.5"-2"-1"" you can do this and have a plate on the 2" with a 1" hole cut in the middle with the 1" pipe going up. from the outside it will look like 2.5" to 2" but on the inside it will look like 2.5"-2" with a plate on the bottom with a 1" hole in the middle with 1" coming up.

Does this make sense? i can maybe draw a pic of what i mean... i have to head out now but ill try something quick...

how about this?

2" piece with a plate on top with a riser of 1"

then put the 2" - 2.5" over it. hey presto your 2.5 - 1" but using 2" and saving on reducers.
2.5 bok.jpg

This is just en example, if you have 2.5-1.5" then same thing applies. just make a plate so you dont need more reducers. a plate for the column with only a riser (is also downcomer) :handgestures-thumbupleft:
plate could also be on the bottom of the 2" to make volume smaller

Does this help??

That's actually a really good idea that I never would have though of!
If I put the outlet as close to the face of the plate as possible, there shouldn't be TOO much smearing
Would just need the 2 x 2.5" to 2" reducers and a 2" connecting socket

Cheers!

1/4" copper if you have any non working fridges some have several meters of this copper could be used or used as a practice coil.
