When life hands you a pot still, make whiskey and rum. ;-)

Yep your onto it Doubleuj , i'll show the haters and naysayers :obscene-birdiedoublered: I hardly got any sleep last night because my internet feelings had been trampled by Plumby :violence-smack: :teasing-neener: :teasing-neener:

It may take me some time but I'll get it done .

On a positive note I picked up a MAP/Oxy torch set yesterday , that will make silver soldering easier I'm sure .

May be worth doing similar.

That's exactly the ones I was making for the home brew shop only twice as long

After a short spell , I'm back with it .
Coiling 1/4 inch tube to fit inside a 2inch pipe is not easy . Started off with a hollow mandrill but found the 1/4 in trying to kink at every movement . But anyway got there in the end. So thats 2mt of 1/4 coiled there , I'll stuff a copper scrubber or 2 up the center and hopefully that will knock most of the vapors down . Now to go and cut the top off the column drill a couple od 1/4 in holes and try an jiggle the 2 ends of the coil thru .

I'm going to fly solo with the braising tomorrow , just wondering if anyone is prepared to recommend an % of silver in the rod/solder ?

I had a practice run with a bit of scrap today and I think the 2% wire they gave me is not high enough in silver as the copper started to melt moments after the wire did .

Any thoughts ?

Cheers Al

I went from 5% to 15% rods. Took some getting used to with oxy acetylene. It melted at a much lower temp and ran more readily (everywhere). With 5% you had to feed it in and it settled easier (without running) but needed more heat. Almost a pain in the butt to control the melt with 15%. Be good with mapp or butane though I reckon. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I'm using MAP /OXY , same as this . I got amate to do the original fit up for me , he did it with a MAP only torch and it just wasnt quite enough heat . This one tho :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Quick heads up for anyone that gets one of these torches , keep the inner flame as long as possible , uses less oxy . I didnt , got carried away with the hissing sound of a short flame and the oxy bottle emptied in about 5 mins :crying-blue:
Had a read of the instructions and yep there it is in black and white for me ~x(

You always want a carburizing flame when working with silver solder (long and feathery 2nd flame about 3-5x the inner blue) otherwise the silver and copper will oxidise and you will have trouble.

If you use an oxidising flame (no 2nd flame and hissing) not only will you find that you blow through bottles of oxygen but the solder wont run properly and you will be using heaps of flux to constantly remove the oxidation around your join.
