FSD 2" Boka

Reflux still design and discussion

Hey guys,

Been thinking a bit about getting a Boka lately.

Just thinking, dangerous I know, but is there a particular reason why people don't use a Boka for a stripping run? (Or do they?)

Output valve open wide and let 'er rip?

I would've thought that the RC would knock down the vapours without any reflux and you collect all the liquids that fall onto the slant plates after the PC.

What am I missing here?

A Boka without packing could be used in that fashion but the issue is mainly with the pc. The coil will have trouble knocking down the vapour with a lot of power thrown at it and product will come out quite hot. A shotty or a long liebig is a better option in a stripping situation. I use a pot still that has an inbuilt coil condenser. It does a good job on spirit runs where the take off rate and therefore the power requirements are low. During stripping runs it really struggles to do the job. I can use it but it is slow. The FSD 2” pot would be a good option for stripping runs.

Thanks for reply Les, that does make sense.

I was just thinking if a Boka could be configured as a hybrid still or not. I'm not trying to cheap out, it's part of my research.

So, theoretically if the PC on a Boka is something like theFSD 2" shotty PC it could be possible?

Hi Tesla

I have the boka and pot. It was cost effective as it uses the same column. For a few hundred dollars it makes my life easier. Given the cost of good quality vodka it pays for itself in no time.
Cheers
Carol

ps I can post some pics of the pot still set up if you like.

Sorry Carol, one more question. Do you remove the packing when you use Natasha for a stripping run?

Yes Tesla No packing in a stripping run.
One stripping run (one fermenter of wash) takes me 2.5 to 3 hours.
While I am keeping an eye on Natasha, I clean the fermenter and refill it.
Three stripping runs for a spirit run with Boris ( packing back in).
