CCVM potential reflux modification

Hi Guys,

Was looking at CCVM stills and the condenser part, and then came across dephlegmator's used in column stills.

My questions is, instead of changing out the head from Pot still mdoe (closed off) or reflux mode and inserting the coil at the top, could you just put in a dephleg before the tee section, and simply hook it up water when refluxing, and when running in pot mode turn it off so it doesnt condense?

Is it that simple or is there a difference between a coil and a dephleg that i dont know about.

With the ccvm the depth of the coil into the top of still dictates the smount of reflux. A deflag could be controled by water flow or turned off for pot mode. Cant see why it wouldnt work..unless I am missing something..

Doesn't the cap above the condenser need to be vented for safety?

No valve on ccvm would be vented through pc? :-B

I've been strongly considering ccvm and trying to work out differences to a defleg.
The defleg is more compact
ccvm is meant to be faster with adjustments, but I think a high tube count defleg - less water volume, faster flow, quicker reaction, wouldn't be too different
When you oversize the Rc though, a defleg becomes less responsive to small adjustments, whereas a ccvm would just add a bit of extra time to hit equilibrium and then still work fine

Hole at the top- needed for the coil to work, hot air has to go somewhere, possibly undersized on many stills I've seen out there. I can't see a reason not to block it when looking for full flow, it would reduce the inherent reflux ratio a small amount
