"Pure Distilling" reflux still from 5 Star

As some may know I struggle to get around these days. It takes about an hour and some fancy equipment just to have a shower in the morning. Taking DVA to court but that's another story.

So could I ferment a TPW in the "Pure Distilling" reflux still then at the end of fermenting simply start the stilling without needing to transfer the wash. I know this sounds incredibly lazy but it would make life a lot easier for limited mobility people like me.

I have a T500 plus a couple of 25 litre fermentors with heat pads and a temperature controller, which I would happily swap for just two "Pure Distilling" reflux units if this will work.

Your learned opinion please.

I don't think that's going to work, you need to remove the yeast bed from the wash otherwise it will taint the result and in all likelihood burn onto the bottom of the boiler.

Maybe there's a way to improve your process to make it easier to manage. What part of the whole process are you having trouble with?

Mate, hang out for the boka from 5 star before you guy any more gear

I see little advantage to swapping to the other unit aside from the elimination of plastic

You could brew in the boiler and and vacuum the trub out with a siphon hose if its moving the liquids around that's the problem? i assume the t500 has an exposed element and the other has a boil dry urn base? would be easier with the urn base but not terribly impossible with the exposed element

A few of the guys have magnetic drive pumps for moving liquids around

Do you own your residence? some I beam and a electric winch might help otherwise - these are all problems commercial guys have, maybe try to research how they achieve things on a big scale

I would recommend sticking with what you’ve got.

Purchase an ozito pump from the green shed, and a cheap filter from keg land. Then attach some garden poly pipe to a wooden stick and ensure the end is four inches up from the bottom (to ensure you don’t suck up sediment). All up benefits are:
- no heavy lifting
- filter some of the yeast particles out of your wash
- costs peanuts

P.s. don’t buy the wort pumps, they are useless.

I wouldn't use anything that isn't designated as food grade.

If you have problems with moving the wash from fermenter to boiler try siphoning into plastic bottles can use 2 liter drink bottles need about 12 or can get Golden Fields Vegetable Oil 4l at Woolworths when half price for $9 which is a 4 l pet bottle and good quality.
If needing to empty the boiler take the garden hose to the boiler turn on water tap and then disconnect from tap and will siphon out if lower then the boiler

Thank you all. I currently use a submersible pump in the fermenter to move the wash to the still. Not too alarmed over a metre of plastic as the AbV at that point is only about 15% and it is not stored just run through.

Thanks Prof. I should have been a wake up to the yeast "sludge".

Does the submersible stir up the yeast bed?

If it does, try using a panel beaters paint filter for the output (looks like a coffee paper filter) and stuff it in your funnel. Surprising how much it captures. I can send you up some if you would like to experiment with it?

Thank you kind sir. That is a great idea and one of our little gang of bootleggers has some. Will certainly be using the next time I pump up to the still.
