Vapour Management Still are they good are they hard to run

Postby Hagrid » Wed Nov 14, 2012 8:32 pm

So I am hoping to be the new acquire of a vm system.
I have read some on them but it seems a little involved so I was hoping for people experiance and be able to learn what I need to.

vooharmy I am hoping that I have one that is not to far away.
However I am also a little nervous as I have only used a pot before and I feel like I am jumping in the deep end.

Hi Hagrid,
In short, they are easy to run :handgestures-thumbupleft:

It sounds like a lot, but it is pretty simple :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I think you'll find a VM a dream to run compared to a brew shop CM rig :handgestures-thumbupleft:

The tutorial looks very involved but if you break it down into steps it's pretty easy really, 2 or 3 runs and you'll be stilling like a seasoned shiner. :-B

Thank you all for that.
Not run it yet as I have just ordered it so about two weeks before I get it.
With holidays coming up it look like a good learning opportunity.

:scared-eek: well I stared the run today and I would like to talk about it.
First I had to strip my tpw and :violence-smack: impatient dick I am it had not finished fermenting stupid cold weather we been having.
I got 30 lt at 20% and I am running it as we speak.
The temp = at 75.5deg left for an hour and then blead off 500ml as a second lot of for shots cut. I have since got 12 400ml jar of product at 95-96% over this time temp has gone upto 78.0deg.
I well do cuts in morning.
When I read kiwis vm management I am not sure why my temp moved so much.
Also not sure how to work out tails. If I am still getting product at 96-94% can there be tails in it.
So much I am not sure of.
When I smell the product it has a hospital smell ? Is that normal at 96%.
Any comments welcome.
I know I have done the wrong thing about low wines.
Kind

Hello hagrid,

The abv's seem a little high...maybe a temp impacting on reading, but no dramas re test it am today.

I'm no fan of doing cuts the next day some do and good luck to them, I let it sit for a few days before cutting....extra airing get rid of a few more volatile bits we don't need or want.

If abv is about on the mark then suggest if equal sized cuts jars, water a centre jar to below 70% apply same water vol to remaining jars, good stir then do your cuts...it's a far different beast at lower abv's and flavours come out the higher abv hides.

Yeh your right at real high abv's it is funky...hazy in mouth, clinical smell, wide on the palate, burning tongue sides, light/transparent on front of tongue, hot when exhaled are a few i'd use.

Good safe fores and early heads cut...play it safe ...wd

cheers

Thanks for that bt1
I have thrown out 1.2lt of heads and 1.6 of tails. Left me with 2.4lt of neutral.
Going to put down a new wash tomorrow and got a fish tank heater now so will make sure it finishes.
I am learning a lot though.

Nice,

When starting to use heater place them in the wash lid ajar for good 10 minutes before your final yeast stir in/closing fermenter and turning it on so it "normalises" to wash temp so you don't burn the guts out of em with a colder heater...
