Been busy out in the shed again today and built this still out of 2.5" (62mm) copper pipe.

These stills are pretty simple to make, and was the first type I made myself.

This one is 1.4m tall with 1.1 being packed column and will have no trouble reaching 95% ABV.

All it needs now is the boiler attatchment and she's ready to roll.

is there any advantage/ disadvantage between the slant plate design and the double reducer?

In the big scheme of things theres no real difference at all, they are both liquid management (LM) stills and the operation of the two is exactly the same.

This particular design just saves a bit of money because you dont need the reducers, the saving is not a lot tho in the smaller versions, but in 3" the reducers are about $20ea.

I timed everything from start to finish and allowed another 1/2 hour for the boiler connection...... 3hrs total to build it, coil and all.

The double reducer still takes the same amount of time, but is harder due to keeping everything plumb and straight.

For a first build for a novice, the dual plate is the way to go IMHO

I have got 120L of wash ready to power through.

Looks fantastic :) can't wait to fire it up.

What sort of heating capacity do you think this tower would be able to handle just out of curiosity (in terms of Ws)?

I also feel silly asking this but which hole do I feed the water through and which is the hot water exhaust?

I reckon you could throw a lot of heat at it, but as far as watts go I dont know because I've only ever used LPG :?

The water inlet is the line with the join closest to the condenser, the outlet has the join furthest from the condenser ;)

I run 2200 watts for a 2 inch column and it is about right, at the end I'ld like to be able to give it a bit more "juice" to get the tails of quicker but it's no big deal.

With a 2.5 inch I'ld definetly insulate your keg and column to keep a bit more heat in.

I've never run a 2.5 inch, I am kind of jealous - size does matter no matter what people tell you :) and now you've got a big one.......

saw this today when i gave Starkles a hand drilling some holes in his boiler

he now has a 4400 w powered pretty awesome looking still !!!
