Reflux still any good??

Postby Bazzt » Tue Sep 03, 2013 11:29 am

I am looking at this reflux still that is on ebay(link below). I am not confident in building my own and getting materials is very difficult where I live. Would this be a good starter? I have a keg and will be using that as my boiler, also have a good quality temp controller, with thermocouple.

Personally I wouldn't go for that one (annoying CM design), have a chat to JayD or Mac (see commercial section) and see what they can work out for you.

Whatever you decide to do, take some time to read up before you spend any money, it's easy to waste money in this hobby if you're not sure how stuff works.

Id steer clear of it too and look around for something better, you might need to spend a bit more ,but you will be saving money in the long run.
You really need to think about what you want to make before jumping into buying, Do you Vodka or netural type drinks or do you want Rum or whisky???

Thanks for replies.
I have been spending a lot of time trolling through the forums and other sites. I have no real workshop or tools (or skills :)). I have a keg, and was looking at a Boka, but think its a bit beyond me to make, plus getting materials where I live is near on impossible. I mainly want neutrals for making liqueurs, and eventually rums and some Jacks knock off when I get more skilled in the art.

I will steer clear of this one and keep looking.

Cheers

A rough location in your profile can do wonders for people helping out, there may be someone around the corner from you with what you need ;-)

NOOOOOO! Stay away from these. I got bitten by these for my first still. Only got funky oily yellow distillate out. Tasted funky as. Came out low ABV for reflux. Lucky a mate could show me what it's meant to be like. If you can't build one spend the extra and get a quality still. In the end, quality is everything

people leave feedback once they get the still. then once they do a wash and run it they cant change the feedback

I bought one of these used it 3 times, PITA to get it to run :crying-blue: . It is well built but is a a poor design. I will be desoldering mine and turning it into a pot still head.

Later I bought a 2" Boka , it's slow but works! Installed a condenser on the output for stripping runs.

I would love a bubbler, but this is where I am at present :D
