Odin’s Gin Recipe

Hi Everyone

Followed Professor Greens advice about trying Odin’s gin as a first step into gin making. Have 5l of 43% sitting with botanicals macerating at the moment. Will run it through my 5l boiler and pot still tomorrow morning. Just one question however. Should I bring the ABV back to 40% before running it? The boiler has a concealed element. Hope someone can advise me on this.

This is a safety thing, the higher the abv, the lower the ignition/flash point, I can't quote numbers to you but boiling high abv is very dangerous even if there are no apparent sources of ignition, the big boy's take into account static discharge for example.

Everyone should have a read or refresher of the safety section, if you prepare your plan for a fire or spill in your stilling area beforehand, it may save you and others significant grief

This recipe is my standard gin recipe, simple, refreshing and full of flavour. I have also done this one double and triple strength, then added more neutral at the end. I find it louches and I simply add 42% neutral until it clears to my liking/.

I usually dilute back to 30%; safety is paramount.

Thanks for your advice. I expected this from a safety perspective but couldn’t find it written anywhere on discussion about the recipe.

Just finished the gin run in my pot still on top of a 5l boiler. Ran it through at 40% and collected 2l (plus a couple of small jars to follow). (Wanted to see the smell and flavours after the magic 400ml/ litre mark) Had a power controller connected to the boiler as it has a 2000w element. Heat up time was only 10 minutes. Ended up running it at about 60 to 80V through the run. The final product came out 77% (corrected) and was very happy with that. Can’t wait to bring it back to 45% and have a taste. Thanks again for your advice.

Hi Folks

Well I took the gin back to 45% and noticed a bit of louching after a few hours. Added some more 45% neutral and it basically disappeared. A slight haze has come back into the gin that I’ve bottled but I don’t mind that. When adding ice and tonic water, the gin becomes quite cloudy. It’s actually quite a nice effect. After doing a bit of research, it looks as though the louching may be caused by the citrus oils coming out of suspension. It may end up as a bit of a catch 22. I love the citrus flavour but if I want to get rid of the louching, I need to cutback on the peel or dilute the gin. Don’t particularly want to do either. Might use this recipe as a base for an ink gin and see how that goes. More play time to come.

As far as I'm concerned, a gin that louches is a good gin; just go with it.

Just bottled my first ink gin for my daughter. Not a bad drop. Odin’s recipe works a treat.

Hi TDA,
Used about a dozen butterfly pea flowers. (For about 350ml) Didn’t impact on flavour but it does give a nice colour changing effect when acidic tonic water or lime/ lemon added to the drink. My daughter brought it to my attention. The butterfly pea flower is often used for herbal tea. The flowers were placed in the gin for less than an hour to achieve the colour change. Amazing to watch. Readily available on eBay.

I just use Queens Food Colouring. This is Classic Blue - 2 drops per bottle.
Tasteless. More drops would make it darker.

I used blue and red food colouring when I went to a mate's Origin Party earlier this year. I had 2 bottles labelled up as Blues and Maroons.

Went down a blast!

This is how I do it through a T-500 with great success! It's too simple to go wrong IMHO! I don't find the T-500 strips the flavour out of the final product either.

ODIN'S EASY GIN
Neutral 1L @ 43%

Botanicals
Juniper Berries 12 g
Coriander Seeds 3 g
Tangerine/ Mandarin Peel 1 EA

Method
Macerate for 2 weeks. Dilute to 30% and redistill with botanicals in boiler. Let this sit for 5 weeks (if you can).

It can be scaled up; I usually run x3, but drop back on the tangerine when I do. I've removed and also left tangerine/ mandarin in the boiler. Louches, so I simply cut it back with pure neutral until I get what I want.

I've made it off the back of TPW and WPOSW; both excellent results.

Macerating for two weeks is way too long if you're going to be distilling this in a pot still with the botanicals in the boiler IMO. 12-24 hours should be more than enough bring good flavour across.

I usually aim for 23 hours of maceration before power is turned on to the still. I am yet to play with how sensitive this is but so far 23 hours has given me consistent results.

He is running through a t500 reflux hence the long maceration..
