Commercial whisky distilleries and bubblers

Postby Sparrow » Fri Aug 11, 2017 8:57 am

Gday all,

Just a quick question out of nothing other than curiosity. Are there any commercial whisky distilleries that use bubblers? Everywhere I've looked it's all pot still, and I'm unsure whether it's tradition or quality that's takes it to that?

Cheers for any input,

Sparrow

If you are going to make whisky going to be little income before its ready to sell so i think they would have to make gin or vodka to survive .

Thanks for the replies all,

@whiskyaugogo do you find any noticeable characteristics of the whisky that change between say a bubbler single malt vs pot still single malt?

Lots, (and we make bourbon and moonshine) the product is much more refined/clean and they are super efficient. Smearing on cuts is negligible and one run = full flavour @ around 90%

I know it's an old thread, but I stumbled across it searching for something else and thought there might be some interest in knowing. I've visited a few distilleries down here in Tasmania and those that aren't using a traditional style custom copper pot (usually by the hand of Peter Bailly) are equipped with various plated columns or bubble plate stills. Some copper builds, some readily available commercial options. Photos below from various online sources.

Bit of a worry how wet that floor is, WHS and all that, unless it was done for artistic reasons...

I think most distilleries now wear safety boots and in my experience, they don’t slip on a wet floor.

Static electricity is a big problem when have flammable liquids having the ground wet could possibly help plus if there was a spill would dilute and run into drain.
