New stilling room

Postby Astro » Tue May 08, 2018 12:31 pm

We have a car garage that we dont use other then for storoage that ive just finished insulating and lining the walls and roof.
Once ive finished doing another shed (lots of sheds at my place) im allowed to move all this shit out and start making up my own dedicated stilling shed with its own cooling water tank :D
Pump is a bit loud but ive made a enclosed box with vents so hopefully dull the noise abit, water will be going back into the tank as we arent on town water and may need it if times get tough. main house tanks arent connected to this tank.
At the minute only have one 15amp circuit which suits my 2400 watter but will be getting a lecco in for more lines for when i have enough $$$ for a shiney Bubbler.

any hints or tricks anyone has done that would be usefull feel free to post away as its a blank slate

Dedicated, cool!
Step one. Cut 2m square hole 1-3m deep, for enough roof height

Looks awesome, that will be a great space for stilling.

If you've got more of that board I would build a long box/cupboard for your fermenters that can be kept warm/cool all year round, ideally off the ground higher than your boiler so you can siphon wash straight in. I would also build a big cupboard that your still lives in so once you've finished stilling you can close the doors and no one will be the wiser that you still at all, that's what I would like in the future. I would also recommend a sink with a drain so you can pump the dundar straight down the drain without lugging buckets etc outside. The sink will be good for cleaning stuff too :handgestures-thumbupleft:

That was a concern mate, reason why i went with the pitch roof hopefully there is enough room in the centre, 3.5 m so should be enough for a 4 plate

On demand gas(?) Hot wayer system for mashing water. Drainage inside the shed near your still would be awesome. A cupboard built to suit your bubbler to keep it out of site. And one for your ageing bottles. Bench space for cut glasses etc.. Perhaps a cooktop to make snacks while stilling...theres a start :handgestures-thumbupleft:

That's going to make for a very nice set up Astro you lucky bugger.

I can just squeeze 4 plates and and 500mm packed section on top of a 100 litre boiler under my 2.4m shed roof so 3.5m will be plenty for just 4 plates.

Cheers,
Prof. Green.

Do you have any axillary fire fighting capacity being on tank water if there is a loss of power the water will cease to come out of the water tanks .

Yes mate i have a petrol powered 1000ltr trailer if the need arises, hopefully doesnt.
Also a petrol pump as backup for the house tanks

I suppose in theory for safety's sake, any of us not on town water should have something like this, Im thinking of changing our tank pumps to battery backed up solar with a large header tank for the house, our block slopes so plenty of free pressure
