Bunnings barrels

Postby P1ratepat » Mon Dec 03, 2018 6:57 am

Hey guys, was in Bunnings yesterday and spotted these barrels, they still smell of wine and according to the local Bunnings staff that’s what they housed. The staff could not tell me any more than that though. I asked them whether or not they would still hold liquid, and whether it has been treated since leaving the winery, would anyone here know anymore info and whether or not 199 is a good price?

I would be worried about how they've been treated, pesticides etc

That is super expensive. Do you have a winery within driving distance. They usually sell them for about half that price. I get them for $80.

At the $200 I doubt anyone has done anything deliberate to it, that all seems to be a upsell for places flogging barrels... we have a couple of full time "furniture" sellers up here in qld on gumtree at that price for a untouched barrel

I hope you're not going to try to fill it with a t500.... :teasing-tease:

Yea there’s a couple vineyards in driving distance cheers for the heads up, as for filling with the t500 no way, I do run a 2 inch pot mostly now, the t500 only runs neutrals for liqueurs that I got accustomed to, and I like vodka, but I do only have a 25 litre boiler so filling that barrel would be a lot of work and if I buy a barrel it will be a long term goal haha

You're going to have to make a lot of booze to keep something of that size filled. Might be worth considering something smaller for hobby level distilling. I don't use barrels but I'm sure someone else can recommend a good source of smaller barrels.

I dunno, but I'd guess the type of wine to be aged in barrels wouldn't be the super cheap stuff. They use stainless vats for that.

Bought a couple of 220 litre barrels from a a winery. Started filling one up with white rum. Got up to 120 litres and no matter hard I tried the evaporation rate beat the rate that I could make more rum. The other keg I filled with water to keep the barrel tight. Two days later I went to inspect and found that borers had gotten into it and there were 5 or 6 x 1 mm streams coming out from the sides where the borers went in.
I've since given up on barrels and use glass or stainless steel with oak dominoes. The wood to liquid ratio can be made higher and you get a good result in 4 to 6 months where a barrel might take at least a year or two.

Evaporation rates for a half full barrel is excessive but settles down to around 4% when full and in a relatively high humidity environment like qld coastal areas.
A towel wrapped around the outside and kept wet for a few days a week might have been enough to get it full!

Bluc the trick would be to use them as a table in a BBQ area and if people ask it's full of water so it doesn't get knocked over!

I run a 6in pot on gas and still reckon it'd be a hard 7 week slog to fill one!
Then kick back and relax!

No reason even with a 4" you cant do three kegs in a day thats 9 odd litres a day at 90 odd then cut back. Call bs on evaporating faster than you can add yarra :teasing-tease:

The way i read it was that the barrel had a physical hole(s) in it that it was leaking through.
Not that it was evaporating.
Should be able to fill any size faster than it evapourates, even at a weekly stilling rate.

They sell Bung Putty and wax to help seal leaking barrels could probably use bees wax on the outside of the barrel .Has anyone looked at re purposing the wood from a large barrel to make a smaller container that still works like a barrel.

Scythe, op said one had rum but couldn't fill above 50% and the other had water which got eaten by borers.
I agree that filling shouldn't be a problem though. My 100L barrel soaked up approximately 10L when I added the first spirit to it so maybe on a 200L barrel over the first few weeks it soaked up all of what the op was adding and it was what he thought was evaporation...
