Gout

Postby Fatguts » Fri Jan 11, 2019 3:12 pm

Woke up this morning about 4am with gout in both big toes. Had a few last night but nothing to drastic as I was supposed to go to work today. Cant even let the water from the shower hit my feet. I've been struggling with this on and off for the last 6 months and used to get it occasionally before that. Doctors tell me to stay of the alcohol (I dont drink beer or wine) dont eat certain foods and drink plenty of water which ive been doing(it just happens to be mixed with sugar and yeast, then distilled) I take a tablet a day which is supposed to be a preventer but its doing bugger all. Despite my user name im not a fat bastard, 185cm tall and 98 kgs. My personal opinion is its not due to the alcohol as I never had a gout problem until June last year. Im drinking way less than I was back then. I know red meat and things like mettwurst and pepperoni have an effect on me but im stumped as to whats causing it almost monthly for me now. My doctor seems to have no idea either but I suspect he lives on a diet of rice, vegetables and curry.
Any one suffer from the same?

Yep, been there!

I'm on medication for it now and haven't had a problem since. The doctor accidentally left me on the introductory dose which meant it wasn't as effective as it should have been for the first couple of years. Once they upped the dose to the correct amount I was good as gold.

Hope you get it sorted mate, gout is just so painful. Even someone glancing at your foot from 5 meters away hurts!

You dont need to look for it....it will find you and its an unwelcome painful annoyance. Most people can eat and drink whatever they like and never get it. Its a build up of uric acid in the blood which then crystallizes in bone joints, normally big toes, feet and hands. The affected joint becomes swollen and is extremely painful.

Yep, been there and still doing it...Whilst gout has always been called the drinkers disease, I work with a bloke who gets it and doesn't drink, so that's fucked SWMBO when she gets into me, but I do drink a lot of piss. I got it pretty bad in my elbow and the specialist stuck a needle in it (steroid) and that fixed that. I have noticed in the last few years that other random joints are also being attacked. The specialist prescribed me a drug (cant remember what it was) to reduce my uric acid level (that's what causes gout) had to take it every day. Took it for about a month but it turned me into a right miserable bastard so i offed it. When I feel an attack coming on I dose up on anti inflamatories (Diclofenec 50mg - prescription). Max dose is 100mg/day, but when that gout hits, that doesn't cut it and I've been known to take 200mg before I go to bed. fixes the problem, but I don't want to know what it's doing to my gut. I'm not a fat bastard either, 186cm and 94 kegs. I feel for ya mate, and I get it in the big toe too - it's the lowest joint hence why it gets attacked apparently. Hang in there. ;-)

And then there is pseudo gout!! Very similar symptoms but without any uric acid in your blood. It's related to osteoarthritis. Doctor prescribed Lengout which fixed the problem in my knee but had to stop taking it following heart bypass surgery and a change in medication. Osteo Panadol keeps the knee pain mostly at bay. Whatever the type of gout, you have my sympathy. It's no fun.

Pseudo gout...I hadn't heard of that one but it makes sense. I have to get x rays on both feet this week so they might be looking for signs of osteo. I've tried the Lengout. After 3 days I couldn't be more than 30 seconds away from a dunny. Terrible on my guts. The best thing so far has been Prednisolone 25mg but they are steroid based and can only take it for a few days. Im starting to get a bit better today and was able to hobble around and do a few odd jobs. Scary thing is i know it will be back soon.

I wouldn’t recommend that, you’ll have lifetime regret if you find it. I get it in my feet once or twice a year & it sucks balls (not literally either otherwise everyone would want it :-D ). I take colgout for a couple of days when I get it & it works well.
It’s honestly the worst pain I’ve ever experienced & I’ve been through a bit. It’s the sort of pain where, if I’m going for a leak at night, I try to hobble so I don’t wake the whole house up an let out an involuntary nervous giggle every time I know my foot will touch the ground
