Shotgun V Dephleg

Postby Sam. » Wed Apr 11, 2012 10:52 pm

What the fuck is the difference between a shotgun condensor and a dephlephmator (is that right  )

Is it just that the shotgun is a product condenser and the other is a reflux?

A shotgun condenser can be used as a dephleg as all dephleg means by definition is the condenser that is used to create reflux so any design of condenser that is utilised in the reflux creation is actually a dephleg.

A dephlegmator is a condensor used to create partail reflux.

You control the amount of reflux (cm) and therefore control the amount of product taken off.

So a dephleg in a modern bubbler/perforated plate column that is creating 100% reflux in the plate stacking equilibrium stage before the flow to it is reduced and vapour allowed to bypass, isn't really a dephleg?
Or is it better to define a dephleg as an adjustable reflux creator and it doesn't matter what configuration, whether it be a shotgun, coil, traditional jacketed dephleg or whatever as long as it acts in the role of a fully adjustable control mechanism it is there fore by definition a dephleg?

my understanding is,Its a dephlegmator ( de-flem-a-tor, is how I say it ) if it only partially condenses the available vapour to it when run flat out.
If it is capable of total reflux then it's a reflux condenser, not a dephlegmator. Both vary the amount of reflux by the amount of water flowing through them
but I have been wrong before

cheers

Stubby has the definition right according to Harry, who i trust on these things. It could be said that when your reflux condensor is turned down it is operating as a dephlagmator if you want to really get stuck on definitions.

If you just call it a dephlagmator people will know what you are talking about though, and that is the whole point of names and labels. ;-)

That makes sense. Whoever named it obviously did to confuse the fuck out of people!
