Ferment air filters? Is this even a thing??

Postby rlmisso » Wed Apr 08, 2020 10:03 am

Hello Brains-trust,

It's been a while since I had anything on the go and the misso was quite enjoying no off smells around the house, working from home in iso has got me wanting to get busy again.

I was thinking to try and reduce the smell I could somehow filter the air coming out of the airlock. Maybe a carbon filter or something to go on the end to try and reduce the smell. Has anybody done anything like this before, or have any other ideas on smell reduction

Maybe run some tubing from each one to outside? or an extractor fan?
A carbon filter for air sounds like a lot of drama
You might have some luck with some indoor hydroponics stuff though

Put some nicer smelling washes down? Lols

Maybe keep topping up the airlocks (if your using them) with some peppermint flavoured (pick one the missus likes) fores/heads, I use fores when I use airlocks, otherwise it's just a source of water for bugs

How about one of those carvan inline charcoal water filter joined to your air lock. Grommet in fermenter to suit charcoal filter then an oring on airlock to seal to filter  charcoal will remove smells from air lots vids about it on youtube :laughing-rolling:

Run a hose from your airlock to outside.
Or use her not liking the smells to justify a new or bigger shed you can brew in.

The difference in running a turbo yeast wash to running one of the recipes listed on this site was night and day for me, the turbo gave my misses a head ache and i almost puked the first time i did it, i run a wheat bran wash now and smells ok, i think it has to do with less stress on the yeast.

Haha, thanks for all the input. The problem is the smell is outside! I have a dungeon... 4 concrete retaining walls and a concrete roof. It's really just the molasses which she doesn't like. I like the smell so much one day i would like to develop a cologne!

The caravan filter is well worth looking into. the essence in the air lock is prob the easiest to try in the short term. Hadn't considered it but it sounds promising. Maybe add a bit of natural in there too.

In that case just try a bigger airlock, like a bucket and run a tube to the bottom of it with lots of tiny holes drilled/bored into it to make the bubbles really small. Smaller bubbles, better chance of dissolving. If it works at first then stops working, change the water. I'm not guaranteeing this will work, but it's a cheap solution if it does.

Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.
