Why put the temp gauge on the fill port ? you have a spare 2" unused just thought it might be safer and not get knocked around so much.

Because I can, and that's where it suits me to have it...... plus now I can pull the fill port off without burning my widdle fingies :))

Just got the pot still started on the stripping run for the third gen of my UJSM and man the smell coming off is just :teasing-tease: , gunna be a crash chill of the backset this arvo so I can get gen 4 going as I'm heading over to the gong tomorrow for my mum's funeral. After reading last night about using wheat I'm gunna have to have a go at malting a kg or 2 properly then crack some unmalted grain and do a mash to add to the 5th gen. This should give a new profile to the standard USJM and when I get back to SA next weekend a 25 litre spririts run of the first 3 gens will be on the cards. Also read about adding some backset to the spirits run so will crash chill a few litres of this run to add.

Cheers Bryan

Mac
That sanitary pump... how would it stand up to 65% spirit?
Got a few experiments that need doing.

Not in the shed, but out in the garden yesterday, putting a new corrugated iron garden bed together.
Lost my balance, stepped back onto a large rock and ended up on the ground and on top of the granite rocks that were behind me.

Currently nursing bruised ribs, shoulder and everything else on the right side.
Was lucky I didn't crack any ribs.... Missus thought I'd killed myself... was just winded. :violence-smack:

No lifting kegs or anything at the moment..... bugger. :angry-banghead:

Just finished filling a 4 cubic meter bin with crap I have been hoarding I couldn't even get it the bloody shed to do any distilling. I was very edgy throwing my collection out but I needed to make a decent safe area to properly set up my still so now I have the room the fun begins. :happy-partydance:

G'day Guy's,
Well got the stripping run done , 7 longnecks and looks like another stripping run before I'll have enough for a 25 litre spirits run, was 40C in the shade here today and trying to crash chill the backset was fun. Anyway got it down to 35C and thought well it's gotta go in or that good irish guy will make it into vinegar 8-} . Just went out and looked to see the brew and she's bubbling away nicely with cap already formed and the temp gauge is reading 42.5C :o

So it does look like this lowans baking yeast is a total different beast to beer yeasts as in the past when one of my brews got too warm the yeasties died on me. I reckon by the time I'm back from NSW it will be close to ready to strip.....

Why are you crash chilling the backset? I use hot backset to dissolve the sugars for the next gen...

Zak first thing in the morning i'm heading off so had to get the 4th gen going today and it was still 60C when I went out a couple of hours later so after dissolving the sugar it had to be chilled as noway was 50C+ liquids was going into the fermenter to give the yeasties a hot bath........
