Because molassis varies so much you could probably look at the ingerdiant table from where you got the molassis, that should give you a closer rough estimate.

I use 7L per 30L wash, I work out my molasses amount by Liters x 1.4/2 this gives me roughly 4.9kg of sugar and a wash of 9.6% in reality it is a little less. My molasses is 52% sugar and my yields have ben fairly consistent, off a 28L strip I get approx. 5.6L at 40%

Iv only dabbled in molasses so far (to be fair); recently bought a 44Gal drum so I can get a lot more serious with it!

Had previously followed MacRum then then had a play with Buccaneer Bobs versions n (ingredients were the same, process was different), but wanted to get into it now that summer is here!!!

First will find the email with the 'reported' list of whats in there...
Thanx Tas for your explanation, makes a lot of sense!

Ezi,
Where did you source the 44Gal drum of mollases from? I've been looking, but haven't found a source.
Cheers

Mate theres a couple down in Perth area,
Stockfeed West - 08 9250 1964, spoke to Bill;
Landmark (ex Perth) - I spoke to Jessica & Lachlan (both from Broome);
City Live Stock - 727 Gnangara Road Lexia WA;
I have received some information that may be helpful for a West Australian cousins. You can buy the 14kg pails of Bundaberg Refinery Molasses at PFD Food Services on 08 94110500. If you have any problems talk to the W.A. Bundaberg Rep., Ken Allister on 0418857559.

Don't be afraid to do a search ("Search our Site") at the top of this page, I just collated this info because I've been wanting to do this for a while...

Also found the ... MSDS (?!?!) of the molasses I bought:
Molasses MSDS.pdf

This also has a couple of contacts on it... haha supplier and another stockfeed...
enjoy

City livestock where I bought mine (mate picked it up and transported it for me) cost about $35 for a 20 liter drum. Take your own container. Mine was an old HCl square drum.

Molasses has unfermentable sugars if you do a search "dextran in molasses" that the dextran is created by lactic acid bacteria and that if the cane is burnt and not crushed quickly the dextran increases .
Lactic acid bacteria if it converts sugar to dextran can your stored molasses get infected and become less fermentable .
The sugar mills can add a small amount of enzyme to convert the dextran back to sugar .

The most common species found in the sugar factory is Leuconostoc mesenleroideJ . Dextrans are formed by the breakdown of sucrose in a manner similar to enzymatic inversion., except the glucose portion of the sucrose molecule is linked into a growing molecular chain (dextran) rather than released.

Did the report mention 'which' enzyme to use to reverser the creation of these dextrans?!?!

Thought id give an All Molasses a go this year for my rum. Finally got time to put a wash down this arvo. Just used..
22 ltrs of feed grade molasses
3 tsp of DAP
1 tsp of Epsom salt
200gms of bakers yeast
Topped to 90ltrs
The nights are cooling off a lot here now so wrapped fermenter in a electric blanket to keep temp around 35 deg. Its bubbling away very nicely atm... oh, the sg was 1.125
Didn't end up clarifying either... thought that might be next times experiment.

Heres hoping! :D
Had a look at it this morn and it was sitting at solid 36 degs and it was fizzing away like mad. If i had an airlock it would be going nuts...anyway just what ya need for a good rum ferment.
Looking forward to comparing it to a Macrum. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Yeah im hoping thats the case. :dance:
My previous rum (with sugar) last summer was sorta lacking a bit of ruminess.. it is getting better with age on oak as you'd expect, but id love to get a bit more body in there from the start.
If the smell in the shed is anything to go by she'll be the goods!
