DAP Supplier?

Postby Matt_Pl » Mon Jul 17, 2017 4:50 pm

Good Evening all,

can anyone suggest an online supplier of DAP?

The local Ozbrew shops doent sell it and I prefer not to use the second option listed in Google, Made-in-China.com.

Thanks all

That sounds awesome Matt.

I'd be in for a KG or whatever is optimal around postage satchel/box sizes.

You have to look at the heavy metal content.

I got some (as well as Activated Carbon $1.16 p/KG and Dairy Power SS steriliser) from Campells Chemicals about 15 years ago (do they still exist?). Vermin don't touch it, but you gotta keep it out of the air or it goes brown (still works).

So I suggest you guys look for Chemical Companies (the high security ones) to source the good stuff really cheap (ring ahead, take your Safety glasses, SC boots and high vis shirt).

Dex is readily available from Manildra Starches too.

The few times I have purchased DAP it has been in a fine white crystal form and I store it in a jar with some of those little packets that come in pill bottles hoping to reduce the moisture and stop it going hard.

Looked up DAP, via Google, and it seems to come in several colors and gradual sizes. Not sure if it is best to use a refined version rather than the more commercial product.

Just had a look at the link. that is all fertiliser grade. I don't know about you but for a few extra bucks I would buy a kg from the brew shop and it is a clean white crystal powder and for memory not that expensive if bought by the kg. Still on same jar i bought a year ago. How much do you put in each ferment? I only put in a tablespoon or 2.

When making Teddy's FFV 25 liter wash I use 1 teaspoon each of DAP, Citric acid & Epson salts plus 1 crushed multi vitamin tablet.

The yeast seems to get enough nutrient as the wash finishes in 3 days. I guess it is the combination of DAP & Multi vitamin, maybe if the Multi vitamin was not included then more DAP may be required.

I only put 1 tablespoon in which is well within tolerance. but have put 2 in in the past. When all my runs were great I could not tell the difference so dropped back to 1. Recently have not been using it and keeping it all simple as per recipe to get my rum back on track after a few bad batches of molasses. now back making good rum will be putting it back in. but might start off a little lower and see if i an notice any difference with the ferment.

I use 1/2 teaspoon in a 40lt wash, I've heard too much can cause nasty flavours.

A quick google says 1/2 teaspoon in 5 gallons

Diammonium Phosphate (DAP). A source of nitrogen for yeast. Use .5 - .75 grams per gallon (1/2 tsp per 5 gallons) of must to aid yeast and help reduce later problems with hydrogen sulfide. There is a superior nutrient regimen (using Go-Ferm and Fermaid K) for wine making:

Click here for a PDF of the MoreWine Manual on re-hydrating wine yeast and a recommended nutrient addition.

A rough approximate of weight is 1 tsp = 3.1 grams. We highly recommend using a scale to weigh the product for an accurate dose. We do not recommend relying on these rough conversions for accurate dosage rates.

E.E. Muir & Sons have food grade listed on there web site food grade 6 kg and they are in the NT.
Not sure how long it stores but could use as fertilizer in the garden.
