As low as 15 degrees and as high as 35 I have gone in the past.
I have zero temp control so I just mix it up and let it go.

What Sam said! Gudday RD,

temperatures are often dictated by the yeast you use....

Normally you would top up to the 25l mark but don’t worry it’ll be fine

Alcometer is for spirits. Hydrometer for wash. If its on .094 and stays there for few consecutive days its done :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I generally keep 1/3 of the run as hearts (others would probably call me crazy) but it will all depend on how your still runs, how you run your still, quality of wash, how well your wash fermented out, what the ingredients were in your wash and your personal taste buds. There are so many variables (especially personal taste) it's hard to say.

Have you read the cuts thread? My suggestion is to be harsh to start with and experiment once you know what good spirit is.

Mate it depends entirely on your own personal taste as to where you do your cuts . I usually end up with 1.2 - 1.5 lt of 95% , but I discard about 1.2lt from each wash .

In my experience so far with TPWs you will end up with about 500ml of spirit per 1kg of sugar in TOTAL , then start discarding .

Just remember its not about volume its all about quality .

Thanks guys, my main concern is to remove any harmful stuff, I have been carbon filtering so far and will probably continue to do so. Also I intend to air my 90%+ alcohol for a week or so and I am also going to try using a fish tank aerator.

I’m chasing really pure alcohol. Sick of the wet cardboard taste from turbos.
Once the TPW stops burbling do I just throw it straight into the pot for a strip with no interference at all? No flocker, finnings, yeast killer, paper filter, carbon filter etc?

Also, to improve yield, has anyone blended a portion of turbo? Like a 2/3’rd TPW with a 1/3 Turbo? Or is this just a waste of time?

Cheers

Once the TPW stops fermenting, leave it for a few days to a week to clear, it will do this naturally so no need to add any clearing rubbish. It should have a nice transparent pink colour to it once it clears.

I wouldn't bother trying to increase the yield, this stuff cost bugger all to make and anything you add will taint the neutrality of the results. You're better off collecting a couple of stripped washes and then combining them and running those nice and slow through your column to get a better hearts cut.

FWIW, I make my neutral with WBAB and usually only end up keeping around half of the product as hearts with the rest going into the feints collection to be rerun at a later stage.

Prof. Green.
