Aging/Oaking in a Corny

Postby The Stig » Thu Feb 15, 2018 5:01 pm

Ive started aging/oakng in a spare corny keg.
I have removed the rubber seal around the lid and used stainless wire to dangle the oak.
Im planing on leaving it around 12 months (with sampling along the way)
My concernis, how do I get it out ?
Will C02 be ok to push it out?

I dont think co2 will work without a seal. I am pretty sure there is silicone seals available for the corney. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I should have been clearer.
Once I am ready to start “tasting” I would invoke the seal for the C02 push and yeas I was thinking of buying one of the silicon seals for the exercise

I use old 19L kegs that don’t have the gas connections so I bought a 2”-3/4” reducer and a ball valve from FSD and use a tri clamp. Lay the keg on its side and drain what you want. Works well but it does gurgle as it pours to allow air in/ whiskey out.
But works well for me

Definately considering a keggerator and pre mixed spirits along side a beer of choice :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I'm in the finishing stages of building a kegerator Bluc (if you start, make sure you get yourself a 140L bar fridge. Anything smaller will be a PITA) - It's my daughters 21st coming up so seemed like a good time to get started. I'm using it for beer only, but you've got me thinking. How to use it as a postmix for spirits? Where would we get the "postmix from?

I got the kegerator but this is asking about pulling out the 65% for proofing and bottling.
But the idea of bourbon and coke in take is appealing

Heard of people using the soda stream concentrates with good results.

I bought a cola one about 8 years ago and never tried it 8-}

Or real coke or ginger ale etc from bottles then add co2 like you would for beer. I have heard that you need a slightly higer pressure for pre mix. I use the term "postmix" very loosely 8-}

stig I se zero reason why you couldnt decant with co2 just make sure you get pressure rated silicone line.. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Why not just make a pouring spout?
Might need to dril a breather hole, and have a way to plug it when not using it.

Or is a corny keg too much of a hassle to handle?

What about putting a tap on the bottom of the keg so you dont even have to lift it to decant.

Hi Guys,
I have tried making draft spirits on tap
First time i made my own cola using cottees cordial in the keg, tasted like home brand cola which i dont mind for mixers, and simple used as cola on tap.

Second time i added 65% UJSM directly to the cordial mix diluted to approx 8%.
I did notice overtime that the first half of the keg tasted stronger than the second half of the keg.

I havent done any research into chemistry, however from my experience i would suggest the alcohol component doesn't carbonate, so sits at the bottom of the corny and gets sucked out first.

For me i wouldn't do it again as i think having mixed cola is more versatile for different drinks and beneficial for non drinkers visiting (kids/preggos)
My advise is you would likely need to top up with spirits say half way, however being carbonated i think you would lose the ability to measure the alcohol in the mix? would rely on mix to taste, much more likely to make stronger than anticipated drinks

I did think about this but then the keg is "spirit only" and cant really be recommissioned to beer

Just buy one specially for it then, even a dinged up second hand one will do once its clean...you're going to reseal it anyway.
Problem solved.

Get a tap to attach to the top and invert it/lay it on its side when you want to drain it

I am not sure what size they are but the gas liquid posts should unscrew maybe can get a compression fitting and some stainless pipe replace the post with a spout. Unscrew the other for a breather while pouring? :-B

I’ve decided that a tap will be the best way to go.
Now the problem is how do you do up the backing nut to get it to seal?
Or could somebody/anybody/everybody link me to a SS tap that doesn’t need the backing nut

There wouldn’t be enough room to turn it would there ?
And you still need to start the nut
