Best Grain Mill

Postby Cheersbigears » Fri Dec 21, 2018 11:31 am

G'Day All
Looking at getting a grain mill is there ones to stay away from or what is the best or ones that are reliable. Im looking at getting this one a Marcato Marga Mulino Grain Mill on sale at the moment for $164 to my door down from $320.

Is there better one for around the same price. Looked at the ones on the bay for $100 but I would say for the extra this would be the better way to go. Don't want to spend hundreds on this.
Any advice from anyone.

Cheers

I've been looking around for one too. The one thing I've been keeping in the back of my mind is i want one that can mill all grains, including corn which takes a better quality mill so ive read. It depends what your going to put through it i suppose.
The one ive been looking at is the mill master. It is a fair bit dearer than most, but i might go halves with a mate which makes it a bit more affordable.

Id be interested if anyone on here knows about them. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I could be wrong but I don't think it's designed for beer brewing...Are you gunna mostly mashing and sparging then fermenting off the grain or are you going to be grinding fine and fermenting on the grain? If your sparging and fermenting off the grain get one designed for brewing. Doesn't matter which one you use if grinding fine..

I would personally get one that will also do corn(my cheapo malt muncher does cracked corn to flour but don't know how long it will last) check out crankenstein mills https://www.crankandstein.net  they look the business and will be my next one.. I believe monster mills does one that will handle corn also..

I like the 3 roller design concept more (Research only, no act experience)

The Mulino one wont be big enough, you will take ages to process - its designed for a cup or two of flour at best

I have a monster mill 2 and it's had easy half a tonne of grain through it and still like brand new. They claim it'll do corn but I've never tried, if I was to do corn I'd run it through twice first to crack then to the required size.
I've had 5or 6 rocks end up in it over the time I've had it and with a drill going flat out the only damage was to my wrist. I learnt the first time not to use the trigger lock on feature lol.
Easily adjustable to any required size.

Just had a read of the mill monster site, they said about the mill monster 2:

This mill will NOT mill corn. It is designed for barley and wheat malt, rye, and un-malted wheat. For corn see the 2Pro or the 2ProPD.

This one dose 60kg of corn an hour, it looks like it dose fine flour grinding ok, the knob on the front would be the adjustment for size at a guess - but no real details on how large it can go

The ad says it draws 3000 W. You'd need a 15 A circuit to run it.

It's okay, it's Chinese 3000w, so probably only 10amps :))

Seriously though, there is a number of variations up there, some with smaller motors

Heck, no doubt most of us would be happy to "have" to install some (more?) 15a outlets anyways

And blackjack
And hookers
Ahhh forget the power points

Can't say I've read their website dB, I was referring to the user reviews I read before purchase. If I were planning to run lots of corn I'd be looking at something built for purpose.

Used it today for a mash tomorrow. Didn’t time it but it was fast an easy. Put some malted barley with malted rye in to start with, about 5l so roughly couple kg fills the hopper an it chewed it to a coarse flour in bout a min. Then it was time for corn. I bought cracked, it was just as fast but could hear it was working a bit harder cause I put ear muffs on for that. 5l of cracked corn is about 3kg. Will buy some whole corn on Monday if the feedstore open an let u know how that goes. It runs on normal 10amp power. So far so good :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Iv run about 40kg of grain through it now, it’s done it easy and fast. I want mine ground to a fine flour and it only slowed a little. The knob on front is the adjuster and it will grind as large as u want it. I got a corona mill and a 2 roller and they just don’t come close, they will be put up back of shelf to be forgotten about. It seems like a winner imo as far as time saving and the ability to mill as fine or coarse as u need :handgestures-thumbupleft: only time will tell on quality but it seems heavy duty.
