So happy with my 5 Star Distilling carbon filter...

Postby Boomgate » Mon Jan 28, 2019 4:21 pm

I bought this just over a year ago and finally got around to using it. The main delay was simply mounting it somewhere, and I took a break from distilling.

So anyway, I wanted my TPW wash (through a reflux still) to be even more neutral.... and WOW... It smells like water... and any remaining flavour is gone...

I ran it through at about 45% alcohol. not sure if I can run it through at 93%.

Here is a photo (aka, stainless steel porn). The Stig custom made this for me for the size I wanted.

Just to clarify, this was purchased from the Macs well before we took over.
But thanks for the plug boom :handgestures-thumbupleft:
But if anybody wants one of these we can still have them made to measure

Gold industry, uses activated carbon that may be a cheaper option to buy.

The answer your after is in the first pic.
Appears to be held by a clamp/broom holder attached to a board.
Main thing to think about is the weight it is required to hold.

Presumably there is a fine mesh filter holding in the carbon at the top and second top tri-clamps?

Couple of questions please:

1) My only experience of carbon filtering was from my T500 Still Spirits days where I used their carbon filter arrangement to make neutral (carbon cartridges). It really only worked with 25L batches due to how slow the neutral moved through the filter. It took hours to go right through. Is that also the case for this sort of filtering? Or is it possible to filter larger volumes of spirit in a sensible timeframe (without loss in filter quality I mean)?

2) I've heard some folks filter brown spirits. My rum is already very clean due to the cuts I make, so I'm not sure whether I'm wasting my time in trying or not? I don't want to rip the flavour out. Presumably you would filter the white dog, before putting on oak?

I built my own carbon filter (looks very similar to yours), and yes, there are mesh filters at either end to encapsulate the carbon. You can re-use the carbon, simply by steam cleaning the stuff whilst it's in the tube. If you have a look in the book section you will find an article all about carbon filtering and how to clean, etc. And yes, I agree, they are quite effective, but I wouldn't tip my brown spirit through it as it would strip too much flavour. I've actually put a tap on the bottom of mine to slow the spirit down too.

Don't all carbon filters have taps on the outlets?
My reading that it needs to be filtered fairly slowly, not just tipped through.

Yes, needs to be very slow, the slower the better, a drip every couple of seconds at least. You want as much contact with the carbon as you can.

Hey Lowie

Do you have a picture of your filter build please. Looking for a bit of inspiration.

Sure mate, here you go. I see you're in the UK. You can buy all the parts off ebay or Ali Express. The mesh filters are squashed between the tri clamps. I bought a few different sheet sizes to experiment with. Cheers.
