Sweet Sorghum seems to be a low water crop but 40 plus may be getting a bit hot need about 3 to 4 months of suitable temperature 12–37 °C.

Just for interest regarding long term storage using plastic - I did my usual process, filtered it at 50% and put about 15 Litres in a 20 Litre plastic drum with some oak sticks in it. Then life changed and it was left for about 5 years. I went to it the other day and tested it. The hydrometer sank and so did my heart. So now it appears I have coloured water.
But the question remains - what happened the alcohol? Do I now cut up the plastic container and drop that into my preferred mixer? I took some from the bottom as well as the top but they were both the same. I know 5 years is a very long test time, but it sort of gives the impression that the degredation would start immediately the alcohol was put into plastic. Any ideas?

Chuck it i vote, 5 years in plastic prob aint a good thing, even at 50%, they used to sell bundy n jimmy in 25l plastic totes, but that was at 40% ... it may be fine but for the sake of doing another run... Seems like a waste, but your health is worth more than any booze

Could be me, but I use my hydrometer in the fermenter... and my alcoholmeyer to measure the ABV of my final product...
I would expect the hydrometer to sink all the way in because in because there would (should) be FA sugar left ... :wtf:


As far as storing it in plastic, I’d be inclined not to do that, so my vote is to use it as a cleaner...

Hydrometer or Alcometer. I'm with ezi if hydrometer sunk that's a good thing. If Alcometer bobbed up to zero it's a bad thing. 5 years in plastic personally wouldn't drink it :handgestures-thumbdown:

Put down a double batch (60L) of Macwhisky this arvo.

Got 25L of it to run soon and also bought the ingredients to put down a double batch (60L also) of Brendan's Faux Bourbon.

But man I'd forgotten how great the Macwhisky smells when fermenting!!

Well after a week of hard work got the weekend to play in the shed so after getting the fire going to get the shed nice and warm got onto grinding cracked corn for my first AG mash planned for tomorrow. Also ground up the barely malt I made and man the smell of home made malt made me smile. :happy-partydance:

As I need a clean 60 litre fermenter for the AG I collected 6 litres of CFW to run thru my minime so did the strip runs today, as the cube of cooling water got warm decided to call it a night but overall a top day in the shed and a better one planned for tomorrow as I am a AG virgin and it is time to lose that tag.
