Weather damage barley, suitable to mash?

Postby Rock » Tue Aug 27, 2019 8:33 am

I was wondering if anyone has tried to use shot barley grain as a malt?
Considering that if it has shot in the head whilst still in paddock , and dried before you can harvest it, would this still be a malt grain with diastic power to convert.
Asking as I can have access to plenty.
The guy who has it used to all grain beer brewer.
Opinion on viability please

It may have diastatic power to some degree but the sprouting/drying would have been all over the place. I reakon it would be useable to a degree if cheap my advice grab a drum full and give it a go you can always add malt for more diastactic power if you dont get good conversion.

WIth Malt the sprouting is stopped when the acrospire is about 3/4 length of grain it may be passed it...

Thanks for your reply. And giving it thought you have great points. Still useful but may need some extra power.
When I get my hands on it, I'll do a mini mash and check what conversion i get in gravity points.
But as you say , drying time may have been anywhere.
Be a couple of weeks before I get my hands on it.
