Mounting Elements

Postby GINKING » Sun Feb 09, 2020 8:40 pm

Hi All,

I have officially started my 50L keg boiler build.

The plan is to have a 4" column connection, 4" sight glass, 2x 2400W elements and a drain at the bottom.

I would like to know the best ferrule to weld to the keg to allow me to mount an 2400W element?

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

2" ferrules for elements :handgestures-thumbupleft: put bit angle on them and you can get 2 side by side..

If you purchase these : https://www.5stardistilling.com/product ... ent-guard/
They come with the 2” ferrule to weld on

Are you going to use the current opening as your drain? (flip upside down)

Get your elements as low as practical.

Good luck :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.

Thanks Andrew,
Do these have to be screwed in from the inside of the keg?

I won't be flipping upside down. I like having the handles on top.

I'll put legs on it to raise it a bit to make room for the drain.

No , you weld on the 2” ferrule and the element screws into the front part of the guard.
The element then becomes a “cartridge” style unit that simply clamps on and off.
If your close , call in and I’ll show you how they work or give us a call

Thanks Andrew,

I might do that.

Also do you have any of the long 4” ferrules in stock?

So I have started drilling the holes in my keg. I have done 2 out of 5 holes and wow what an effort it is.

Good news is that the 2x 4" hole are finished and the 2x 2" and 1x 3/4" are remaining and shouldn't be as hard or take as long as the 4" holes.

Thanks of your help yesterday Andrew. You will be seeing more of me in the near future.

Some progress pics below.

If anyone was wondering which drill bits / hole saw bits to use, I used the "Kango Hole Shot carbide Teeth" from Bunnings (see pics below).
Just take it slow and use water to cool down the metal.

When I did my boiler, I just cut a rough hole with and angle grinder then got an expert to weld the ferrules on. I then ground out the inside with an air tool die grinder to make it all smooth and tidy. This made it relatively easy and meant there was no welding slag or rough surfaces inside the keg.
Cheers.

Is there anyone on the forum that would like to please help me out with the welding (in Brisbane) or know of anyone reasonable?

I've always used this guy. Reasonable price, good welds.

Also for future drillers out there, mix water and metho 75:25 for a better coolant.
The heat is removed when the coolant evaporates.
