4 inch bubbler

Postby Dave017 » Wed Mar 25, 2020 8:38 am

Hi all I am keen on starting a 4 inch bubbler build but reading through these forums I am wondering without an oxy acetylene kit is this possible? I have mapp gas but doing 4 inch I read that it won't get the heat into it. So am I biting off more than I can chew?
Thanks

Ive looking at doing the same thing but am having a world of trouble sourcing the 4" and 2" tube (without paying an arm and a leg).

From the builds I've read people use the mapp torches but some preheat the parts in their BBQs to speed the heating process. Mapp would definitely do it, just take a tad more time.

I built mine with nothing but propane and a mini torch. Mapp is hotter than propane. I've since got my hands on a couple of trade quality torches that'll make the next build super easy.

Propane is possible on 4", you've just got gotta be reeeeaaaally patient. One bottle of propane was more than enough for a bubbler, and I soldered my plates in, which took a lot of gas. If I can do it with propane, you can do it with mapp.

equipment: Eve - 4" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (sieve plates), 330 mm packed section on a keg boiler with 2 x 2000 W elements.
Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.

You can get a kit to attach to a lpg bbq.bottle(use a reg) and a full flame tip you can hard solder on 4". And have heaps cheaper gas then the little torchs :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I bought a braided adaptor hose that lets me connect my BOM torch to a POL log bottle.
Works well so far, made a blanking plate, put a flange on my RC and touched up the solder around the tubes for about an hour last night.
Using a 12mm pencil flame tip and soft solder, hard solder / brazing rod is beyond this set up.
