anyone used Kveik ?

Postby Finley44 » Sat Apr 04, 2020 3:03 pm

Hello all, i've been a home brewer for a few years now & I have been trying the diffierent kveik yeasts, when making beers, has anyone tried it for their washes?

If you haven't heard of it here is a wiki http://www.milkthefunk.com/wiki/Kveik

Not yet but I want to make some rum with Voss. I've been brewing beer with it for a while now, love it!

I've made a few beers with it, I've tried Ebbegarden, Framgarden, Opshaug & Hornindal, I have 16 strains at the moment, keen to see if it will work well with distilling.

I know it works great for beer, but how would it go with a 10% wash of just sugar?

Just finished a wash, IT IS AWESOME!!!!!

I’ve used it for a while with beer with good results so decided to do a TPW on a beer yeast cake and it finished in 2.5 days.
20l wash with 4kg sugar, worked like a charm.

I tried researching before doing it and couldn’t find any info so thought I’d give it go.
Initial results are good, very early days but taste seems ok. I haven’t done a turbo wash so I can’t really compare to that. I might do a turbo for comparison.

So far it looks like it might be the best of both worlds, quick ferment and decent taste.

Bread yeast is a little hard to find at the moment, hence using kveik.

Definitely on the comparison list though

What kveik strain did you use? What flavors/esters can you detect in the spirit?

FYI I seen lowens on the shelf yesterday at local woollies, but I needed some last week so I bought fermex from an Asian supermarket and it seemed to cause the biggest reaction in the fermenter that I've ever seen on my molasses only wash. All over in 36 hours. I'm going to run it early next week.

Voss throws out huge orange/marmalade in beer when fermented hot. I love it!

Some will be butter rum. Heat to 58c hold two hours then cool then run as normal. Promotes diacetyl (like microwave buttered popcorn) production
The rest will be run as normal see what esters the yeast produces. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Edit:Actually temp is 57.2c
