Burnt Elelements and All Grain

I dont do all grain but a friend does and hes running into issues.
He did a few sugar wash's and had great success but has now moved onto Rye all grain wash's and keeps burning elements.
The setup is 100L boiler (FSD) running 2 x 2400W twin tube heating elements (FSD) both on controllers FSD kegland)
Heres a pic, elements were clean before the run and the one on the right has been cleaned a little to show comparison.

Oh man, that looks bad.
I have not done an all grain wash (Or any run yet), but how clear is the was going into the boiler?

Looks like there are either a lot of suspended solids in his wash or unfermented sugars.

So is that from the distilling or the mashing/boiling?

BTW where does one get hold of Rye for a good price?

That happens during the stripping run I think.
The grain comes from the Gold Coast

He ferments in the grain then strains through filter bags of various sizes

Are you sure it has fully fermented out? This normally happens when there is unfermented sugar. Whats his mash temp?

Have a look at the mashing technique. If you dont get good conversion then there is too much starch wich will burn quick. I burnt an element in my rims by circulating the wort before conversion was completed enough. At this stage wort was kinda slimy/starchy instead of thin sticky. (This was on unmalted grain. Malting breaks down most of this substance.) Any idea what effeciency he gets? I have not burnt an element during stilling yet touch wood..

I had a similar problem when I boiled my all grain wort. My guess is it is a starch or protein. It it didn't reoccur when I distilled the wash. So I would think that the wash wasn't fermented dry.

To clean the element I soaked them in a solution of napisan. After this soak it just flaked off and I had brand new looking elements again

Yes energy density is too high for the materials used, either pull power right down or put the elements in series which will pull power down on each element by 75% so 2400 watss becomes 600 becaus:

Power = Current squared times resistance,

resistance is constant for one element but current halves and power is relative to the square of that so the end effect is power is 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/4

Haha, I'd love to give all grain a go, but bwko and weetbix is just too easy at the moment.
