FSD Neutraliser - Setup & Cleaning Run

Postby hgwells » Sat Aug 29, 2020 7:09 pm

After ordering a FSD Neutraliser and waiting two weeks for delivery (not Andrews fault, got stuck at Aust Post due to exponential increase in package delivery’s) I’ve finally set the beast up.

Got hold of 10L of “extra strength vinegar” - no idea what that means I always thought vinegar was vinegar. But the normal vinegar was $2 a bottle and the extra strength was wait for it...... $2 a bottle :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Setup the cooling with braided hoses, used Boston sealer on all the fittings, tested and had leaks everywhere. Think I got a dud bottle. Ended up using Teflon tape which worked a treat.

Ran the vinegar though as per “kiwis stillers cleaning run” had a couple of leaks in and around the sight glasses. Tightened up tri clamps, still had leaks. Turned still off, waited until it cooled and pulled it down and reseated the sight glasses and bubbler plates, tightened it all up. Fired the still again and no leaks! Whoo Hoo!!

Emptied the boiler while liquid was hot (into stainless steel jug) poured the hot liquid over the weeds in the paving as read that weeds don’t like vinegar. Will have to wait to see the result.

Will be running water though everything tomorrow and if I get a chance will do a sacrificial run.

Was busy the whole day stuffing around. Awesome fun, can’t wait to do the sacrificial run to start to learn how to run this still.

Thanks to the guys on this forum for all the posts, it certainly has been a helpful resource so far and I’m sure it will continue be.

Cheers

HG

Have fun HG, I am waiting impatiently for my pot still to arrive and am hoping no hold ups occur.

I am guessing you will be up early in the morning ready to go.

It will be just like Christmas morning when you were a kid :)

Hi Wesley,

It’s still going

Think my wash had too low an alcohol content and I’m struggling to get the still to run in reflux and produce a stream through the PC.

Only way I can get a steady output is to totally close the RC and run in pot mode.

God it stinks with the combo of alcohol and vinegar. Can see why a sacrificial run is needed.

Output is a 92% ABV at 20 deg

Lucky have a week off so will try another run through the week.

Cheers

Great minds must think alike mate.

I am getting everything setup to put some washes down so when still gets here I can have a good experiment.
Experiment sounds so much more grown up than play :)

I have 2 weeks off after next week so hopefully the planets Aline and auspost delivers

Have fun playing

Hey HG,
What’s the temp of your cooling water ?
I’ll bet it’s really cold.
Try preheating the cooling water a little

Hi Stig,

Yes the cooling water was quite cold. Think it started at 15-16 Deg, ended up at around 20 deg.
Think I also stuffed up as I watered down 15L of wash by adding 10L water to get the wash level over my element.

I warm up the cooling water nest time to see if it makes a difference.

Cheers
