Greeting from Cairns FNQ

Postby SteveW » Tue Oct 20, 2020 7:38 am

Been an all-grain beer brewer for some 30years, and distiller for 20years.

I have a four x50litre barrel beer brewery, and the HLT converted for a still with a 3600w element, PID and 50mm column.

Just started doing corn/malt mashes

Great to hear from you, you have years of experience we can all draw on :)

I foolishly said I brewed my own beer for 15 years to someone on here the other day. They then proceeded to tell me what they did to get a red beer. My head exploded so now if asked I say I tipped cans of coopers ale into some sugar and yeast waited 5 days and then put it in a long neck with some sugar to gas it. Who would have thought there were home brewers and home brewers lol.

You will get heaps of high level advice on here mate just not from me

Btw your better off not using a pid wich constantly chases temp for control and instead use a similar setup but with a ssr and a potentiometer which will give a const wattage and not smear the product..

Bluc

I was using gas for many years, and only went electric six months ago.

My PID is 15amp with SSR and 3500 watt element.

Are you saying a PWM will give more control, been searching this site, but too much technical stuff for my old brain to absorb?

Can you recommend some good Youtube stuff, and what is your heat controlling setup if you don't mind sharing?

Yea biggest prob with pid is it works off temp so it constsntly increases decreases voltage to hold temp. That will mix the fractions to a degree and it will smear. You will get more heads/tails in the hearts then you should.
With a ssr and potentionmeter although its variable and it switch on off real fast its constant voltage not constantly changing so you will get a cleaner hearts cut. Hope that makes sense.
