So I’ve cut most of what I like tonight and gave it a rest. As I said I cut foreshots each strip and then took about 600ml more in the spirit run.

Tonight I Set jars 1-8 aside which comprised 3 L of heads, then kept jars 10 (85%) to jar 30 (73%) which is about 8L at 80%. Jars 9 and then 31-41 are sitting out for a decision tomorrow. Jar 9 has a nice flavour but leaves the tongue a bit numb after savouring. Jars 31 and on get progressively more tailsy but earlier ones have a nice molasses presence that fades and finishes a bit watery... after jar 41 I just chucked it into feints.

How do my numbers look to those more experienced? Any suggestions welcome.

Really comes down to what taste good and to your liking.. only you can answer that. :teasing-tease:
Dipping into the tails a little bit will help with molasses flavour as they hold a lot of flavour underneath all that mankyness but prob dont go too hard for starters.
If you want to be a bit conservative put the feints in the next run or at least a couple jars either side of your hearts cut.

The first rum I made using the 5 Star bubbler is a year old on oak this month. Smells great! I pulled a small sample and diluted it down to 40% abv and it’s a little bit delicious! Better than the pot stilled ones I’d done previously, but that could be down to experience. I might need to trundle back to the “bond store” and pull another sample, just to be sure...

Advice on here + Gear from 5 Star = Awesome product!

What to do with feints??

Would watering down the heads and tails with some dunder from the last wash and running again through a pot produce anything worth keeping?

Lots on here keep the feints and do a feints run on its own stillthinking.
Other do what you are proposing and add it to the next run they do.
I assume they must get something useful from it and I will be able to let you know later in the week as i will be doing my first feints run tomorrow.
I am struggling to get me head around the fact that it was not worthwhile the first time but is still capable of producing something worth while.
Many comments are along the lines that you often get something rather special from a feints run. Time will tell.
I guess how much storage you have, how often you will have feints available, will answer whether you keep them to run a feints only or simply add to the dunder each time.
Feints of feints are of no value I believe, well not for drinking anyway :)

Definitely worth saving rum heads and tails from a pot and re running them. I stick them up a reflux column and produce a light white rum. Heads on a bubbler are worth re running. Tails in my opinion are not. A bubbler does such a great job compressing fractions that theres not much desirable in there.

When collecting/saving feints do you keep them separate IE rum, whiskey, vodka in there own container or do they go in one big pot?

There are no rules mate and people do lots of variations.

Personally I keep them all seperate as I am just starting out and want to make sure I have my recipes down pat before getting into blending.

Others mix them together because they like the flavour combination, or they dont do many runs so can collect enough, or they dont have storage room.

Others tip this lot of fients in with their next spirit run.

It is all about what works for you

Keep the rum and whiskey separate because of flavour and the vodka can mix if want to.

:text-+1: i run my rum feints (except maybe early heads) through my reflux and get a few litres of white rum i use as a replacement for bacardi.

the feints off the last reflux run i have kept, but not sure what i will do with them yet.
they are officially feints of good quality(?)feints with a high abv.
probably have a sniff and taste in a couple weeks, might add some to the next run, might not. :?

Yes, I was not going to do that. I am in the process of stripping my first couple of Mac rums and may not do more for a while so was wondering what to do with feints

I was thinking that mixing rum and whiskey might be a bit "off" hence the question.

I have copied the recipe exactly and now have 125L (5x25L) of wash ready to be run. I am trying to work out how many cuts and storage jars i will need.

My question is if i strip all down to 20% how much low wines can i possibly expect. Then once i do a spirit run how much could i possibly expect to get ?

I will look to take 250ml cuts and i have 27 jars.

If you have a 10%ABV wash to start with possibly around 5L-10Lper strip run.
So 25-50L would be my guess.

Ended up with just under 30L @ 53%. Will dilute to 40% on weekend and do my strip run.

The low wines smell nice AF. Cannot wait.

Strip a bit harder on the next lot, if you can get the low wines to be under 40% without adding plain water, your ahead on flavour and a (very)small bump in yield

I stripped down to almost 20% but it got very slow going once i hit about 30%, was a very slow crawl for the last bit.

I have 50L of wash to strip on the weekend so I will strip and add to this lot. so strip it harder to say 10 or 15% ?
