Will I need a voltage regulator for my t500 with the pot lid

Postby grasshoppernt » Thu Sep 16, 2021 1:13 am

Please excuse me if already asked.
I have a T500 still and recently got the pot lid for it with the copper condenser.
Is it necessary to get a voltage regulator for this set up or will it be ok for my spirit runs?
Thanks guys in advance.

I believe you will grasshopper, you need to be able to control the speed of the boil in the boiler during the stripping run. This enables the harsher spirit to boil first, ( the heads ) it has a lower boiling point. Then you need to allow the hearts to come through steadily without being over powered by the tails. Even if your boiler has a thermostat these don’t work during the spirit run as they simply turn the heating element on and off where as you want the control of the element that a regulator gives you. I am sure others will chime in as my explanations tend to be pretty simplistic as that is all I understand lol

Thanks mate, not familiar with 5 star.
Where are they? I’m in the west.

I’ve read mixed views on this hence trying to get to the bottom of it.
Running the reflux was easy enough, but new to using the pot.
Cheers

My take on it is this. You can run a pot still without a power controller BUT by doing this you have no control over the run. Chances are you will run too fast and your product will smear to buggery.

With some wash / mash bills you are spending good money, time and effort to get a good product. You wouldn't just piss it up against the wall by not running it properly with good cuts. You wouldn't build a Ferrari and put datsun rims on it.

The power controller will give you good control

Thanks mate,
Bit the bullet and registered only to find that it is pick up only when I went to check out!
Will try to find something local I guess.
Don’t mind spending a few bucks to get the extra quality, lord knows I haven’t spent much at Dan Murphy’s in the last couple of years!
Thanks a lot for your input, much appreciated BigRig
