Yes you Can mate, you may want to do small test batches first to get the right balance :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Malibu is one of the few HBS essences that is close to the real thing .I would seriously look into this way as its very easy and the outcome is good

Just be aware that a lot of white rums are still aged. I'm sure there are a few of the guys on here that don't need to age their white rum long due to using a well run bubbler, but depending on your setup, may require a bit if aging to be drinkable. The commercial ones are done in plain uncharred oak barrels or stainless steel vats.

Would it be better to use a white/light rum for this as opposed to an unoaked heavy rum.

Gave it a go today. I make bacardi type white rum by mixing 50:50 unoaked rum and neutral, I watered some of this down to 21% in a 700ml bottle, I added 2ml of coconut essence and then added sugar to taste (somewhere between 1-2 tablespoons). The result is damn good. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Give it a bash Bluc.
Maybe make a tincture with high %ABV and see how it goes.
Maybe 50g in enough liquid to keep it wet +20mm for a week and see what you get.

Use it to flavour your white rum.
Extract the flavour and mix it.

I didnt make a tincture but just added dessicated coconut to rum.
It looked awful pulled the fat from the coconut. I strained it multiple times but the fat remained. If you ignored what it looked like it was def a coconut rum but the taste was not right, not really malibu. I think if you soaked a heap coconut in rum then cleaned it up by re running through pot still measuring quanitys so its repeatable. Then mix that with white rum and sugar syrup it may be ok buuut Next time i will be buying essence and using either rum or neutral. Simply not worth the effort for me when my staple is a rum and coke. Malibu is def not on my popular drink list, along with most other liquer type drinks...
