I agree ~ BART~ that is what they have on their sachet~ seemed a lot to me too~ I emailed them today but being Friday ~ no reply as yet ~

'on their sachet' - does this mean you're using turbo yeast?
this ferments out to 20%, then you have to clean out the mess with turbo clear?
try an FFV, buy everything in the supermarket, except DAP probably (ebay)
ferments out to about 10% without any bad tastes or the need to filter etc

Can I post a link?

I checked the keg ~ and the wash ~ it tastes very sweet ~ not matured ~ the essence emitting from the open brewing keg almost overwhelming but pleasant - fragrance is great~

So I added two sachets of Tandeco Dry yeast off the supermarket shelf ~

Hello Reztes

Like Howard suggested do yourself a favour and try one of the tried and tested recipes mate. I strongly recommend the wheat bix all bran given you have a pot still. Those recipes did not happen by accident and are a lot easier for those who are looking for consistency.

Good luck whatever you decide

if it smells pleasant and tastes sweet there is something wrong imho.
i think it indicates that the sugar has not fermented, all my washes taste sour after fermentation.
get rid of those yeast kits, they are similar to turbo stuff.
yes, they create a wash that is 20%, but in doing that, many of them make the yeast produce off flavours.
that's why they sell a kit, which includes liquid carbon & clearing shite to get rid of the stink you have just created.
go back to basics and stay out of the HBS,
lowans dried yeast is $4.80 for 280gm in woolies :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Cheers Blokes

I am thinking the exact same thing ~ get out Dodge and the HBS ~ and I think I will get back basics as I have tried using retail yeast with good results.

(I even tried the super Turbo still yeast and it never kicked off under 2-3 days ~ Say whart!? )

I rechecked the wash today ~ ambient temp <25 Deg> ~ and while the contents have definitely reduced in sweetness , after I added the Tandeco Dry yesterday ~ and there is now virtually no 'gaseous fumes' coming out of the keg ~

BUT the reading is still .400/ 5% (Not the 700 I previously stated ~) And little sign of activity in the wash !

Amazing eh ~ A bloke reckons he/ she has mastered this game but then you get another hooked curveball !

ok, thanks to robs pic, we have an answer.
i think that '40' is actually 1.040
that section of the hydrometer is in the scale of 1.000 to 1.100
so it goes from 1.000, 1.010, 1.020, 1.030, 1.040 etc to 1.100
so 770 was probably 1.077

Yep makes more sense now, so should still have away to go at 1040 or is the high amount of sugar killed it and that’s as good as it may get?

when faced with a "too high ABV potential/high gravity wash"
I have found the best option, divide it into two fermenters, and top up with water, and add a packet of EC1118 to each.

For me, there's something majik about EC1118 and how it can clean up a sugar wash. It'll ferment out your sugar, kill the other foul yeast, and clean up flavour/smells.

at least it does this for me.

I have saved bottles of EC1118 salvaged from starters in my fridge, and like it for my sugar washes, and fruit drink Wino. (my fruit drink wino, simply take a bottle of fruit drink, add enough sugar to get the potential to 10%, and put the cap on tight enough to hold, loose enough to vent.... and in 3 weeks, decant into a bottle.
some of my stuff is indistinguishable from premium wines.

EC1118 is MAJIK in a PACKET
