MacWhisky malt question

Postby Royalwulf » Sat Aug 02, 2025 12:23 am

Never done anything with malts so want to dip my toe in with trying a MacWhisky. There are lots of different malts I can get here in NZ. There is an ale malt that looks like it is for beer. Distillers malt which is for distilling obviously. Pilsner malt which looks like it is for beer. And lots of others. My question is does the recipe use beer malt ie ale or pilsner or should I use the distillers malt or it doesn't matter? Thanks

Hey bloke.
When you aren't mashing the grains and are basically "steeping" them, it really doesn't matter what its brewing purpose is intended to be - just the resulting flavour. If you can get small samples, chuck some in hot water for 5min and have a taste. Pilsner and distillers are pretty simple grain flavours, enough to give a hint of an Irish style I'd suggest, and the caramalt extract is basically a two-row barley job, but certainly will add a lot of flavour.

i believe this is the stuff in the macwhiskey recipe. i made a batch, it's on oak in glass, seems ok.

try and use the malted grain in the recipe, i think it's just for taste.
i think distillers malt is just a grain that's very high in Diastatic Power.
