Yeast is like gold

Postby akkanomore » Tue Mar 31, 2020 6:31 pm

Hi everyone,
In these times it is very hard to find Lowmans yeast. HELL out in the Bush even sugar is scarce. What I did find was some still spirits distillers yeast. My question is that do you guys think that a 20 gram bag would be enough of this yeast to ferment a 20 litre litre Weet-Bix wash. I am using a reflux still. Also I have some DAP. Would it help use less yeast and add DAP.

Cheers,
Alan

Yeah it’ll do. Especially if you rehydrate it.
In a big jug add about 1L of Luke warm water (30 degrees or so) and a teaspoon of sugar.
Tip in half your yeast and save the other half for next wash.
The yeast will multiply quickly, after half hour or more it should be foaming up growing.
Maybe longer because you’ll start with such little yeast but it will work.

If you rehydrates it in some warm water with a little dissolved sugar and let it come to life it will be fine.
But, we have heaps of yeast , I don’t understand why people are saying they can’t get any

I have been to 2 Woolies and 3 IGA stores.. in West QLD.. nothing. As I said I found some still spirits distilling yeast at an IGA.. I bought the only 3 bags of so called vodka yeast. There was a few bags of gin yeast.. might go get it. Surely if you're making neutral then yeast is yeast.

general comment on how much yeast in 25l TPW
i have put 80g in one fermenter and 40 g in another, both looked identical after 30 mins.
dont know what minimum would be.
also i chuck in yeast when wash is below 40 c with no problems-after dissolving sugar in 10l boiling water then adding cold

If want to dissolve the sugar in hot water and not wait to cool put the sugar in a large pot and pour in boiling water and then sit that pot in a water bath .May need to change water a couple of times but works quickly.
If making a wash there is no need to put all sugar in on the first day can go in later as long as do not heat shock the yeast and could even work better as yeast can multiply better with less sugar.

Def struggling to buy yeast too, been looking for the last two weeks. Just tried to buy some from coles today and no luck, thought i'd buy some from 5star but seems to be out of stock now.

Stig any ideas when you're getting more? Don't really want to venture into the ebay sellers!

Hey stig
Is that SAF Gold yeast comparable to say Lowans ?
Alcohol tolerance ?
Speed of fermentation ?
Decent rum yeast?
Sorry for so many questions but I saw Chinese yeast in the local corner store in red 500g blocks today but would rather buy something someone has used before.

It’s designed as a sweet dough yeast that doesn’t impart as much flavor as the red lowans.
It’s higher sugar tolerant and likes higher temps.
I don’t have any issues and many others don’t .
There is 1 user in WA that was seeing a slow ferment but that’s an exception to the rule.
Come grab a pack :greetings-waveyellow:
Cheers
