Hydrometer reading impossibly low?

Postby M2thajizzay » Tue Jun 09, 2020 4:45 pm

Hi all,

First post so I hope this is the right spot.

Doing a 'pure distilling' sugar wash with spirit enhancer (liquid carbon sachet). 21L water + 8kg White sugar + carbon + yeast.

O.G was 1.112@ 29C...this calibrates to 1.123 (i think).
F.G is reading 0.900 @ 20C
Over 5/6 days.

According to my calculations this gives me 29.27%ABV and 198% apparent attenuation. (This yeilds >7.6L in the barrel...loco.)

Is this a possible reading- seems way to high for this type of wash.

Hydrometer reads 1.000 in room temp water, and assuming i read it correctly are these impossible numbers?

Temps have been in the low 20's consistently.

Thanks in advance.

Turbo yeast is designed for higher ABV washes, Generally not very tasty as the yeast get stressed and make off flavours.
Not sure if impossible, but I have not seen them go that high before.

It seems unlikely to get that much from 8 kg of sugar. My calculators say you should be getting 18-19 % in the finished product.

Are you sure the hydrometer wasn't reading 0.990? I ask because I haven't seen any that go as low as 0.900.

Good to know Scythe- got a free turbo with my kit so tried it out... looking forward to trying a TPW- seems like that's the way to a true neutral.

Martincash- Thats the percentage i was expecting too- I could be wrong as i'm a newbie- so i've added some pics here just to confirm(hopefully- new to this coding format)

I'm reading that as 0.900 (or close to)

Am I reading this all wrong?

Hi mate, welcome to AD.

The numbers on hydrometers are usually in .010 increments. Anything above the 1.000 line is 0.9xx anything below the line is 1.0xx until you get to the 1.100 mark so what you're reading there is 0.990.

Cheers,
Prof. Green.

Outstanding Prof- that was the one piece of info I was lacking to make everything make sense.
