Really old rum wash

Hey all.
Haven’t done any stilling for a few years, and have about 150 litres of rum wash that’s been sitting in my shed since 2018.
I know there’s been questions asked about washes sitting a long time but couldn’t find anything referring to this length of time.
It’s in an olive barrel with a tight lid but there is a hose for an airlock which has just been hanging down the side.
Nothing growing on top, smells kind of acidic/ carbon dioxidey

What do you all think? Worth a run?

Cheers

Go ahead and strip it mate to get some low wines for the spirit run, a couple of runs will soon sort it out and ya never know you may get that manky rum lovers just aim for.

Cheers Bryan

Yea I've always had a thought to mint up "round to it" coins for all the lazy buggers out there

Mate if that thing is 4 years old your next door neighbours will know if it's rancid!

Must have got your cleaning schedule on point. Probably a good ABV and pH too

A simple test in this situation would be to strip 10-20l and see what comes out.

It might be fine flavour wise, but if humidity has sucked all the booze out, you might only have a 1-2% wash sitting there and kinda pointless running.

In the op's case, as its rum, if it was a low abv, you could potentially re ferment it with some more sugar and or molly - if it didn't kick off with some warm sugar added, some extra yeast wouldn't hurt.

Threw out a 8 yo tpw i found from my first aborted go at distilling, as i poured it the smell was fine n plenty of booze, should have run it.

I must say gents...

Batch put down in 2018

Noticed in Jan 2022

To ask him for updates so soon is now bordering on harassment.

Stay tuned :wtf:

This is true, it has taken a long time to get back to it, I’ll cop that.
But I have a new bubbler and the time has come to give it a whirl. This evening I have racked off about 35l into the new boiler and set up the still. If I get home from work early enough tomorrow I’ll do the run, if not it will definitely be Friday.
Either way, stay tuned. Results pending

Ok, ran it over 5 plates.
Went pretty slowly, bled fore shots off then opened up only a little bit.
Collected about 500mls of heads then collected about 250ml jars after that at 90%.
At jar 7 abv slowly started to drop and a little bit of taily smells coming through.
Kept going to 85% at jar 12 then went to pot mode and stripped about another 2 litres of tails till about 25%

So still some juice in the old wash, wasn’t quite sure what to expect because I’m brand new to bubblers and single runs.
Seems a little low to me? And hard to tell until I do proper cuts but seems like a large percentage of tails?

But I think still worth running the rest of what I’ve got there.
I also think I might recycle the feints straight into the next run and see what happens there, does anyone ever do that?

Did pretty savage cuts. Only kept about 1.6 l of the whole run. Diluted down to 60% for ageing and diluted a small sample to 40% for a taster shot.
Quite nice, maybe a little light on for rum flavour for my taste but pretty smooth and drinkable as is. Should be a good drop after a bit of time on oak.
Might do next run with only 4 plates

I noticed that with rum, the longer in the fermenter it starts loose flavour

5 plates @90% and a high amount of cut product suggests to me that your running a bit fast, I get 88 off wash and 90 off low wines with 3 plates.

I've found the take off rate of around 2 - 2.5 lph with a bit more than the lowest amount of power required to get that rate suits my 4" - ie plates looking full, not below the dc, not looking higher than the dc.
