Postby bayshine » Mon Apr 22, 2013 2:32 pm

hey guys n girls,
after getting my pot still(thanks mac :greetings-waveyellow: ) i did a vinegar run and then some strip runs on sometpw
and then a strip run on my first bko. when emptying the fermenter into the boiler i noticed a very strong vinegar smell in the wash. anyway i stripped it off at 70% down to 10% abv and saved it in a 5lt demijon,it had a funny taste to it and after a day i noticed this on the glass, does anyone know what it is?

Low wines would have a funny taste I spose, never tried it myself, although it couldn't be any worse than bundy :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:
It looks like a bit of crap growing in there, does it still smell like vinegar? And what did the fermenter smell like after you siphoned all the wash out

Hi mate, few quick follow up questions:
- Did the spirit come through clear or coloured through the rum?
- Was the glass completely clean before use?

As gummy said, I wouldn't normally taste low wines, all of the tails in it makes it pretty manky. I'd be surprised if anything would be living in highish %alcohol thought.

yep the demi was sterilized before use and then rinsed with rain water
it came out of the still at 70% and i ran it down to 10% and all was clear but i noticed there was an oily
substance floating on the top a few hours later, then the blue growth started on the bottle about two days later.
the wash bubbled hard out of the fermenter for about 5 day and i let it settle for a day before the strip run.
when i took the lid of the fermenter i saw a few dead weavels that i had missed after the mashing.
i tasted a bit out of the middle of the run well before the tails and it did not taste right but i havnt done this
before so cant really compair. i put backset and sugar back in the fermenter and she took off straight away.

if you've got a vinegar infection your fucked, scrub the shit out and sterilise your fermenters and start from scratch mate.

Once those little bastard fruit flies get their enzymes in your wash it's a pretty sad day :handgestures-thumbdown:

The oily shit is usually fusel oils in the tails, esp if ur running down to 10%.. I'm assuming temp correction?

The cloudy appearance could be the deep tails of the run too

It doesn't look that bad in the pic, just a bit cloudy

If the wash smelt god awful you may have trouble :handgestures-thumbdown:

You can always re run what you got and make cuts and see what it's like
