And at $4/kg its rather expensive

Thats why am going down the home malt path $1/kg + bit effort is better then $4/kg plus freight.

@stig
Obviously 100% malt recipes are most expensive scotch as an example. You can save money by using adjucunts. American Whiskey is a good example way Iess expensive it its 80% corn which is milled feed corn with 15% malt barley 5% malt rye. So only 20% malted grain.
You can also make irish whiskey instead of scotch. With irish they use a mix of malted unmalted barley. So you can pad out the malted grain with cheaper feed barley.

Grains like choc malt or caramalt roasted malt etc are a good way to add lots flavour to unmalted grain. I think 5% of total weight is a good amount for these.
Biggest pain in the ass is squeezing it after fermentation. Good luck

after doing a stout whiskey, mash-25l wash-strip-spirit for just a couple of litres (admittedly it is going to be good  )
i've since done a 7kg grainbill stout whiskey mash again, sparged the mash to 28l, fermented the 28l with safale 05.
then dumped the spent grains with 4.5kg of sugar + yellow angel.
i'm waiting to strip both washes, but the angel seems to get the most out of the spent grains.

How would the yellow angel go on 2kg of spent grain after a MacWhisky wash?

Worth the effort or not?

Thanks

Just follow the recommended pitch rate so wont take a whole lot. Is amazing how much more flavour in grain sugar..as opposed to table sugar..

Cool, thanks Bluc. It seemed a waste to chuck the grains out after one wash.

Would I need to add anything, other than water?

And to what volume should I make it, with just 2kg grains?

Thanks

For 2kg grain in a 50l boiler i would add 30l water and 5kg sugar along with the angel yeast. You can always add more grain.
I would only do one gen with angel when doing sugarhead/thin mashs as after that the grain is spent. Then switch to sugar and bskers yeast or similar.
Angel yeast almost 100% conversion going by guestimate.
Generally I would do one all grain with angel yeast 15kg grain per 50l water(so far most grain produces about same amount spirit). Then just add sugar max 1kg per 5l water for three gens of sugar heads.
I keep backset from all grain to sour next all grain..

That's great info, thanks Bluc.

I was thinking just the one gen with the grain from the MacWhisky ferment, just to wring out the grain a bit more. I'm planning
a few more MacWhisky runs, strip and pot still, if I can put Angel on the grains and strip between MacWhisky's I'll have enough
of each for a decent spirit run through the pot, separate of course.

Haven't planned an all grain as yet, still finding my feet in the 'stilling world, but having a ball. Only done TPW's 'till now.

Cheers

All grain with angel yeast is very simple 10-15kg grain 50l water angel yeast. Stir twice day for 2-3weeks then squeeze settled out the solids then run it..

Anyone tried putting the grains in a steeping bag when using angel yeast?
I was thinking about giving it a go.

If you are talking about a brew in a bag system, it works great!

My 60/20/10/10 is now 9 months old and this is hands down the best all grain i have made. Interestingly i only did the 1 batch as an experiment as i had the oats lying around, was originally planning to do 70/20/10. The addition of the oats is a winner in my book. Side by side tasting with 70/20/10 & bwko, this stuff wins.
