Did you squeeze the grain or just hang it?

Didnt hang it, just held it and squeezed it (and dropped it).

Next time i will lift with the pulley and sit it in the sieve and squeeze so i dont have to support the weight.

I have been scooping a small amount into a biab bag and squeezing, is a pain in the arse.

I am looking at either a press or a steam setup...maybe next year..

Over xmas break i wanna have a crack at rice.

I have been doing 15kg grain batches. Would i use the same weight as other grain or would i not need as much ?

Was thinking In a 60L fermenter - 40L water, 70g angel, 15kg long grain rice.

My volumes of hearts don't change a whole when using different grains lot I would do 15kg first see what it gives you or use a brew calculator to give you an idea of fermentables in rice.

Just did a AG Bourbon with this stuff..
10kg Micrmaize (Flaked Corn)
2.5kg Malted Barley
2.5kg Unmalted Wheat
5ltrs backset (all i had)
100g Angel Yeast
Topped to 40ltrs or thereabouts
Fermented @ 31 deg C
Got it going before harvest started hoping for a day off somewhere along the way, but didn't get any bad weather long enough to run it so it sat for prob 7 wks.
Didn't get to fussy racking it off the grain and lost a bit in the corn sludge.
So i ran 34ish ltrs and got 4.6ltrs @ 77% Abv
If my maths is right it comes in at about a 9-10% wash which is my best result to date for an AG. :happy-partydance:

7 days and its plenty sour with no vomit taste or infection. Hydrometer is sitting at 1.000.

I will rack it on the weekend and let it settle for a week.

i finally ran the 1st batch and i was disappointed as hell with the yield. Was my first go at AG so i know its my process / technique. :crying-blue:

Fermented for 3 weeks outside in warm QLD weather, no heater or insulation. Under pergola with morning sunlight only.

finished ferment had a nice bright yellow colour and was sour with no vomit smell. Could detect slight alcohol scent.

Racked to a sealed bucket next to fermenters for 4 weeks before being run. After 4 weeks, racked wash was brownish colour and had a slight musty vomit smell but still tasted fine, there was no hint of alcohol smell.

15kg grain, 40L water, 70g yeast. 70/20/10.
All grain was feedstore, corn was cracked, wheat and barley was unmilled.

Ran bubbler with 4 plates, bled 250ml fores slowly then collected 5 x 250ml @ 93% before stripping another 1-1.5L of feints to be added to the next run. 5 jars are still airing so no idea how much is keeper.

I keep about 3.3l @65% from 15kg. I find i need to run slower then my sugarhead or tails pushs through early.

Big Rig
You really need to break those grains down first.
Try a blender with small amounts to get it to flour if you can.
There is a noticeable yield difference between cracked corn and flour, haven't even tried whole.
How easily can you eat mince vs a steak?
The husk around the grain is nature's armour, needs to be gone.

Thx RC. You are right, the conversion has been shite. I have run a 2nd batch this morning and the yield was better though nothing acceptable given the effort and cost. Is a corona mill going to get it fine enough ?

Bugger, i didnt see that bit. I have been following your method :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Running the last batch now but i have bumped the abv with some neutral.

My local hbs has rolled / flaked wheat and barley which is cheap. Will that work ? Or will i need a corona mill ? Wife wont let me touch the thermomix.

That sux must have posted on another forum just went back through thread. Here is how I grind. Just note if turning spent grain into sugarhead it can be hard to drain when ground this fine.
