Yes I did! The boiling water absorbs into the grain much, much more. Much thicker like oatmeal. With cold water it's much thinner and easily 1/3 more volume at the start. I'm guessing that it'll even out over time as the grain soaks it up.

Just a little update on us selling this yeast.
The factory is happy for us to buy and the price would be fairly reasonable but.....
And its a big but, we need to buy 50 cartons that's 20 packs per carton so 1000 packs or 500kg of this wonder yeast.
Im not sure what the shelf life is but Im guessing that we would end up chucking at least half away.
So, sorry, looks like we wont be going ahead with this unfortunately.
Cheers
Andrew

Sorry to hear that. Would prefer to buy it from you Andrew as your service is excellent. The price would also have been very good. Paying a premium and waiting up to a couple of months for the stuff to arrive is frustrating. There must be wholesalers or distributors who will sell to you in smaller quantities.

I'll find out when I strip it. Generally, very generally, I usually end up with 1/5th of my wash as low wines, and 1/4 of my low wines as "keeper". That's using Angel yeast and 2lbs of grain per gallon of water.

Quick off topic question dan. Where did you buy this from. Very interested :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Sorry for the late reply. Cheers for the info. Might look into this later down the track :handgestures-thumbupleft:

To have to buy 1000 packs would be a huge gamble ……. can't see 5 Star being able to off load anywhere near that amount before having to ditch them (approaching use by date).

The issue with using this for beer making is the grain will have lots of bacteria, wild yeast and molds, that will not be dealt with through some heat process. I am thinking to put boiling water onto the grains first and let it cool to pitching temperature to reduce the risk of infection.

You can heat up the grain before using does not need to be raw grain, steaming may be a good option.

I thought about brewing some beer with it to see what flavors the yeast brought over. I was thinking of mashing and fermenting in my mash tum, then vorlauf until clear and throw in a keg. It's not an ideal method, too much oxygenation of the finished beer. Plus it would be full of protiens(I actually like "raw" beers though!) from no hot break and the hops utilization wouldn't be great. It's probably why nobody brews beer on the grain. It's great for fermenting a whiskey mash though!

Just checked the gravity, at day 4 it's at 1.010. Should be ready to strip Friday or Saturday.

Yesterday I stripped the first of 4 mashes, today is #2. Both were made without pouring boiling water on the grains to try and sterilize them and prevent lacto. It didn't do much worse than sterilized grains, I had a lacto after day 5 on both. The sterilized grains from before also had lacto by the 5th day. Maybe it's my non-sealed fermenters? I do spray them with Starsan any time open them or do anything. Maybe my garage is just a lacto environment. I might not sterilize the grains from now on since it didn't seem to do much. The strip produced the expected volume and smelled great, today's strip is also smelling great!
