Finished a stripping run the other day and was wondering what to do with the left over grain from the mash. Decided to add some water to thin out any remaining alcohol and tipped everything into my worm farms.

Looks like the little critters love it. Normally the worm beds are fed a mix of horse manure and coffee grounds. I can now say that the little fellas are a bunch of latte sipping, vodka slurping grubs that are full of sh#t. Looks like they have all the attributes be be good home distillers. :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

I've been to my local Woolworths this week and they have 5kg of Japanese short grain rice for $10 which is half price. The brand is Hinata.
https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/sear ... erm=hinata
NB: Looks like the special ends today - a new catalogue starts Wednesdays.
So if you able to get there tonight....
I seem to remember, reading up on the Angel liquor yeast that short grain rice is the best rice for that yeast.

If cook up the rice do not think is going to make any difference and the cheapest is the best rice to use. From what have seen about rice short grain rice is good for taking up moisture like in a rice pudding and sweet dishes.

I heard the reason to use short grain is that it has more strach - which is obviously better. But I'm no expert.

More starch = more sugar with use of enzyme :handgestures-thumbupleft:

So do you get the yeast through ebay or gumtree?
Or is there an Australian distributor?

Looked up Grandado who state they sell it but has a reputation as a scammer.

Havent had a taste for a bit actually, but i was quite happy with the result initially. Certainly saved a bucket load of work. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Has the angel yeast made UJSSM / bwko recipes obsolete ?

If doing an all corn wash with angel do u need to treat this like ujsm with 4 gens of low wines or can every gen be a spirit run through a bubbler?

I spirit run each gen separately single pass

You can go either way, but with a hobby sized boiler, the return on any way of producing all grain is generally less than a sugar head (6-8% vs 10% wash) so a run of a small amount would yield not much drinkable on a single run and make cuts harder

I would be dry very often without uj. Even with the ease of mashing it still takes time and effort to process an all grain post fermentation, the bigger the mash the harder it gets

Hi,
Last I posted on this I was disappointed with a funky taste/odor in this mash so I converted all my efforts to neutral. After Bluc posting about backset and pH I though I would give this another try. So I crushed 20kg of corn to 60L water and added a heaped teaspoon of citric acid to bring the pH down to below 5. This has made a big difference to getting clean result and I would strongly recommend to do this. The fermentation was very slow but I think this had more to do with temperatures in my shed. I pitched at 35C into an esky but no temperature control after that.
Cheers.

I was about to turn my angel yeast efforts into neutral when Wellsy suggested I let the angels take there share so I have had the lids off the dhemmis and left them with a bit of paper towel over the neck for about a week now and wow what a difference it has made. That "funky" smell has completely gone.

:handgestures-thumbupleft: Thanks Wellsy.

It was found by accident and you have to admit funky sounds so much better than vomit like :laughing-rolling:

Funky definitely sounds nicer but in my defense I thought it best to use the best description possible and funky could be so many things.
