I use the 2 row malt muncher with a corded drill fitted.

Only difficulty is with whole I cracked corn.
For this I buy it cracked ( they charge $2.00 extra for. 25 kg bag.)
Then I put the cracked corn through the malt muncher to get the finer grind I want.
Everything else including raw wheat etc the mill sails through it.

They are around the 270-280 shipped currently

Nothing wrong with the smaller set up, just depends how often you want to do corn, the 10c a kg extra for cracked isnt really a killer at the end of the day, one small thing that comes to mind though is that the avigrain whole corn that im getting seems very much fresher than any cracked corn ive seen.

I let mine run reasonably slow and can do stuff while it munches, on my huge list of projects is to try a bigger hopper and a set up so that it feeds straight into the top of the fermenter while mashing

It only has to do 2.8 tons of corn to pay for itself  :)) hopefully im young enough to pull that one off, might take a while though

Ok the verdict. I ended up with 8.8L @65% from 60kg of grain. Down a bit on the 13.2L you get. 33% loss.

Flavour was good, i know its got a tonne of corn but i was surprised how much the corn flavour actually comes over.

I stir twice day every day and let sit for 3 weeks. Others have success fermenting 7-10 days with similar volume. I am not sure if they are heating though..
I think the agitation is what helps.

Sorry i have confused myself I am doing 1.5 batchs now. 22.5kg grain 60l water. From this I keep 3.3l @65.

I wanted to do double batchs but it would not fit in fermenter.

Bluc does 15kg grain in a 50L mash and that's good enough for me too.

10kg is more workable but 15kg gives a better yield.

Thats going to take up a heap of room in the fermeneter.
And at $4/kg its rather expensive

I operate off of the ratio of 5kg of grain to 20lt of water, that's always given me a good ratio of flavour to output.
When I add more grain then that it's always sticky rice for more alcohol with no change in flavour, if you want a good high yield vodka with a hint of sweetness then use sticky rice instead of wheat, angel yeast is made to work with sticky rice so it gives you the highest yield and a very smooth flavour.

Is there any reason we can’t just go to a flour mill and buy whole grain flours ?

You certainly could though i wouldn't go any smaller than meal, you would need to leave it to really settle out before syphoning, would be waiting forever and you wouldnt be able to squeeze using biab

Simply mash some wheetbix? Easy, 30 min in the very hot water, 70 plus. Cool, add the magic yeast and watch! 6 bricks made my 60 litre much like what you want it to be, wheat as well.

The idea is to get away from adding sugar and that can’t be done with weet-bix or can it

It sure can be, let me introduce you to next weekend? Let your head go, 50 gm and dirty sugar but it comes out very well. Mash a box or two and try it with just water and yeast?
