Saftey of pot still on indoor gas stove

Postby Rad Master » Sun Aug 09, 2020 3:25 pm

Hi all

Purchased a cheap still (12 litres) as a trial to get into this, but it requires a heat source. I've currently only got a gas stove and trying to figure out how safe it would be to use with open flame. The instructions said to do a half water half vinegar cleaning run. I did this on the stove to see how it all works and what not, but I'm hesitant to try with an alcohol wash.

I understand one issue is ventilation, so to that end how much benefit, if any, will the range hood provide.

Would love to hear any advice.

Cheers

+1 on what stig said..
You now have an excuse to buy an outside gas BBQ :D
Alcohol vapour is heavier than air so rangehood would not necessarily help if you had a leak
You will never forget the first time you set the kitchen bench alight ( pretty blue)
Seriously take it outside....

If its a small still could possibly use a large electric hot plate or it may even work on induction.

Thanks for the reply's. I am confident I can buy a small electric hotplate and move it out the back which by the sounds of things is the smarter way to go rather than use the gas stove.

I may also consider buying a small electric boiler like they sell in Brewcraft. I'm guessing you don't get the same issues with those, but you also don't get temperature control. How much of an issue is that?

Cheers

You can buy (or build) a power controller to control the power from the elements, also more repeatable than gas :handgestures-thumbupleft:
