Volcanic rock for packed section.

Postby 2deadly.308 » Sat Jan 22, 2022 1:16 pm

Hello, sorry for the silly question but is this okay to use for a packed section?

https://www.bunnings.com.au/brunnings-v ... g_p0127331

I assume I'd have to wash it first?

If not the right stuff can someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks heaps.

I have started filling my packed section with stainless scrubbies but I never bought enough and have read that volcanic rock is better anyway?

Search the forum for scoria.
Lots have used it with differing results.
Don’t break it up too small , probably around 5mm - 7mm in size.
Wash thoroughly.
Do not mix reflux material, different media reflux’s at different rates and will cause havoc with the system

Ahh perfect, thanks mate I appreciate you.

My searches for volcanic rock on here didn't yield much, but I now see there is heaps on 'scoria'. My bad.

I'll find another use for the SS scrubbies then and won't mix, that makes sense.

Thanks heaps

I used the 20mm scoria. Thats bag does not look a consistant 20mm to me looks like a lot of large and small pieces. I used in the 4 inch 500mm packed section (Since sold. Silly Bugger) :crying-blue: I smashed it in half because it was about 20mm from memory so about 10mm
It was a bugger to clean initally, but once it was clean I just boiled it to get rid of the vapours. Got about 92% so possibly ABV is a bit reduced compared to scrubbers. Cheers
