For shots on spirit run.

Postby Clandestine » Sat May 25, 2024 7:20 am

Morning everyone, I took 100ml for shots on each of the stripping runs? Do I need to take 100ml on the spirit run as well?

Some say you don’t need to take the cut on a stripping run .
My way of thinking is , always take the foreshot cut that way you’ll never forget

Headache may also be because your heads to hearts cut is not being made are the best spot.
Dont forget there are heads between the fores and hearts that are best off being avoided.
its all part of the learning curve :)

It doesn’t matter what still you’re using , good cuts are a must but are also the hardest part of the hobby to master .
Only time, experience and trial/error will make cuts easier

So how many cuts would you make when running a reflux still? I only took the first 100ml and discarded and kept everything that followed

There's a good thread on cuts here.

The size of your cuts really depends on the size of your run. If you're only running 30 litres, then collecting 200-300ml per jar works well.

yea like when you first smell a head cut you will scare your senses into making cuts everytime after that, try it and see and best of all learn to do cuts.

Don’t be scared of your cuts mate, the more you do them the easier they get.

You also get to rerun the first cuts when you do a feints run so you can afford to be conservative:)

I don't make any cuts on the stripping run.

For the spirit run which is usually 40L low wines at 40%.

I collect in jars. ALOT of jars. Each has about 300mls. I mark each jar and take some rough abv measurements. I record the time and abv of each jar into a spreadsheet. The jars are covered with a paper towel or left over covid mask :D

I let the jars air for 24 - 48 hrs and then spend an evening sniffing and tasting (after proofing down) each jar.

Then everything is combined to make my final collection.

I do this for every spirit run.

I collect in Corona Bottles. The middle of the X is 200ml. Clear, glass, and free with every carton!

Hey rumblepants you prob already know but others may not, I would be a little careful what sort of paper you put over the jars. Ethanol is a strong solvent it does not need to he in direct contact with the spirit, the fumes will also leech chemicals out of items it contacts. I only ever use unbleached coffee filters.

Eg you can make limoncello by suspending a lemon above the liquid in a sealed jar.. apparently prevents any bitterness.

Hey thanks for the tip. Lately I've been using old covid masks which I believe are pretty chemical free could be wrong though. Have not smelt or tasted any bad things. Have used unbleached coffee filters in the past. Also paper towels :o

Wont use them anymore.
