Advice needed

Postby BenL » Mon Nov 04, 2024 4:11 pm

Hi all,

I attempted to make my first grain wash for a whisky but it didn't turn out when it went through the pot still.

I am meant to fill an oak barrel for a family member but have run out of time due to having to travel. Can I use a sugar wash to put in a small oak barrel or is that a bad idea?

Can I suggest the CFW for oaking , it’s quick and easy and tastes great given time .
I add a little Rye meal to add a little spice
If your looking more a scotch whiskey add a tin of liquid malt to the CFW

I'm using this light liquid malt method at the moment ... just set up a 60 litre fermentation yesterday for my final run through the still.
Because of the risk of puking - I'm only putting 30 litres in the boiler at time. I'd rather run the still twice and not get any puke up the column, than try to run it all at once, then need to clean it all every single time.

So far I have approx 6.5 litres of low wines (average of about 60 ABV). Once i run this next fermentation, I'll then do a spirit run and should have enough to put into a 5 litre Kegland oak barrel that i have ready. Any surplus will be aged in glass jars with 5star oak dominos.

there's a MacWhiskey recipe in the 'Tried & Proven' area, which involves sugar and LME.
i've got a couple of bottles, aging in glass for 15 months.
not too bad, pity it's not in a barrel.
