Where/what - glass containers for collection, storage?

Postby slideshowbob » Tue Jan 07, 2025 7:38 am

Hi all,

Just wondering what you use for collecting and storing during the distilling processes?

I bought one 4L demijohn when I got my still, but it looks like I'll need quite a few more. I've got some glass jars from Kmart for the spirit run cuts.

Any tips or pointers appreciated, especially those at the low budget end!

Hello Bob

I have done the same as you - lots of small jars from Kmart for the cuts jars (currently 2 dozen) approx 250ml capacity when full.
I have accumulated many of the 4 litre demijohns for finished product - for when i make Gin or various versions of the flavorings for other types of drinks.

I have also accumulated many of the 5 litre demijohns (with the flip type lids) which i use to store the high proof neutral spirit and also for stripping runs. All labelled accordingly each time.

Kmart also have the 3.5 litre jars with a tap - probably supposed to be for cordials and fruit juices etc. I find these are great for watering down by marking with tape for 1.4 litres of high proof, then filling up with approx 2.1 litres of water to get 3.5 litres of approx 38% spirit. I never store any product in these except perhaps feints for use the next day (because it does not have a SS tap).

Good thing with the Kmart (and Target) jars, is that they are rather inexpensive.

Hi Bob,
Same as Woody for me.
30x 300ml Mason jars from Kmart ($5.50/6)
8x 5lt Demijohns.
3 of the Demijohns were used up with feints so I found some 19lt Corny Kegs on Marketplace. Ended up with 3 for $95 after some haggling. They have a 2" ferrule on top so I have removed the spear and use a cheap triclamp & end cap to seal. These will be used solely for Feints and low wines storage.

i have heaps of 2 & 3 litre clip lid glass jars from kmart, very cheap.
the silicone seals are wrapped in teflon tape.

whatever you get, make sure every part is ok with high ABV alcohol.
ie the kmart jars with a tap, the tap is plastic, lid is tin.
lots of jars have imitation cork (Agglomerate Cork?), bad for spirits.

I just use moccona coffee jars as cut jars the standard size ones hold 600ml and the larger hold a litre, so just rip the plastic seal off and have the glass lid just sitting ontop to stop the critters and the angels can still get in for a drink too :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I do the same , they are really thick glass as well.
But for bulk aging/storing the corny kegs are great , small foot print and easy to handle , just need to remove the rubber seals with silicone
