Plastic Coke Bottles

Postby QLD.Andy » Sat Mar 10, 2012 9:40 pm

I know I know, plastic bad but.............
I need to "share" much drink far from home over easter and, well, plastic bottles would be easier and lighter.
The last couple of years moving that much in glass was a pain.
So, would 2 to 5 days in PET be OK for 40% ??

Tim n Tickle didnt have a problem with it :teasing-tease:

Havnt you got a couple demijons you could put it in?

I'm uncomfortable with plastic and wouldnt do it myself unless I was going somewhere where drinking grog was banned

I got plenty of demi's but they are glass.
Last year I lost 4 bottles to breakage so I was thinking plastic would last the 3000k drive

I have heard that if it is a number 4 type plastic, it is safe.
if it has a 1 or 7, steer clear.

EDIT: but i have no real proof to back that up!-

At the very least, I'd try and source some of the discarded low end vodka (plastic) bottles out of someone's recycle bin.
How much do you plan on traveling with Andy?
They also got these mesh sleeves ya can pull over yer glass to protect it.
Also at the automotive parts store, they may have some spray on rubber that you can spray onto your bottles. Also for the construction/flooring pros out there........there is a latex (paint grade) moisture barrier available. Here it comes in what would be our one gallon pale.
Just a few dunks with your bottles And you have a nice bouncy glass bottle.can make up an entire set

Before you think of it at least read the basics of the plastic types on wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plastic_bottle

After reading that page, PET seems the most approprioate, but if you click on the PET link at the bottom you will see this:

PET can be semi-rigid to rigid, depending on its thickness, and it is very lightweight. It makes a good gas and fair moisture barrier, as well as a good barrier to alcohol (requires additional "barrier" treatment) and solvents. It is strong and impact-resistant. It is naturally colorless with a high transparency.

Because of that line stating it requires additional barrier treatment I personally would steer away from storing alcohol in any type of plastic.

When you think about it there's a heap of commercial wines and spirits in glass being shipped every day. Suggest Either wine or spirit bottles in their appropriate cartons. ( Your local wine /spirit merchant probably has a heap they dump every day.) I can find all the empty wine and spirit bottles I want in the local household recycling bins.

The trend to screw caps on wine makes it even easier

Demijons wrapped in cardboard is one of punkins ideas I seen on AD I think, or you could just tape them up with bubble wrap.

Hi Andy,

After doing alot of packing lately I have found the easiest way is to go to your local supermarket and pick up a few cardboad boxes that will fit maybe 2 or 3 demijons snuggly.
You then cut carboard to fit between the bottles just like the way they ship wine & spirits. If you are still a little unsure then grab a couple of pillowcases and stuff them around the bottles also.
I have never had a breakage from doing this, and I have sent bottles via plane, train, truck & car, as long as the bottles do not come into contact with each other you will not get breakage.

And the best part is it cost you nothing to pack. :-D

Just saw this on a Facebook post - someone got it as a wedding present.

So someone is using plastic - I wonder how much of it do they ship around like that and how long it sits in the drums?

Im with Mrs Mac on this one......A little exrtra time and care while packing will get it there in one piece. Pack it tight so it cant bang around in the box with plenty of padding and you have won the battle.

i packed beer tallies in bubble wrap tubes and then into these square hobby boxes that where filled with spirit on oak and some of them (80 bottles) made a trip to QLD->WA->VIC->NSW->QLD via removalists over about 4 years and not one ever broke :)

i kept the bottle in the tube for years after a mover supplied them in the 1st move (mine did not have the neck shape just tube )
then they just went back in the trucks each time we moved...
couple of months ago i chucked them...

16 tallies fit in those crates :)

Watchin 'Moonshiners' the other day, those guys use gallon milk containers.

Milk containers normally made from HDPE

Seems 'Satisfactory' at 60 degrees

I don't think this issue will be resolved until someone posts spectrophotometer analysis.
